new bmws getting stolen?

Anyone heard about new bmws getting nicked without keys in the midlands/east london?

there's now a 24 page forum thread on pistonheads.

just wondering if the F25 is vulnerable to this as well?

Probably soccer/football thugs, if they are not rioting, they are stealing BMWs.

Yes all you need to steal ANY car with remote keys is a GBP 500 bit of kit which you can purchase online and which programmes "blank" keys and you can be up and running in 30 seconds.
To get access, thieves wait for you to be near the car when locking it. They jam the transponder signal with a radio jammer (another £300), so that the owner thinks that they have locked the car when they plip the key (when in reality they do not and usually do not realise) and then walk off. Thereafter, the car thief just needs to open the car door and plug in the computer to the on board computer port!!!

My X3 now sports a Disklok. It is a sad state of affairs that I have to faff about with a heavy awkward steering wheel lock on a brand new car. BMW security appears to have been compromised and the company have their head in the sand. The problem seems to be limited to the UK but I imagine it's only a matter of time before this starts happening overseas.

I understand the F series vehicles are less prone to such thefts

No matter what we do, hi tech thieves will keep on working for hi tech cars, we just need to be alert. Nothing is totally safe.

Makes me like the investment in comfort access even more.

I touch the door to lock my car, and watch the indicator stalk dissappear.
No transponder to block or to record signals my locking signal, and even if they do record the proximity signal (which only works for a few feet), I dont walk away if the door lock indicator stalk doesn't retract into the door.

I'm the same way. The remote rarely comes out of the pocket and I don't leave the car without confirmation. I'm more worried about access to the onboard computer.

I always check my door had locked, even without comfort access.

if you check out the youtube link, it states that it only works with the E-series.

You should also be aware that you are more susceptible (IMO) to this if you have comfort access because thief 1 can follow you after you have locked your car, stand next to you in Tesco and then thief 2 waits by your car and relays your car's "I'm close enough to unlock" signal to thief 2. This is possible because for comfort access to work your key has to be active (it's passive without CA and you need to physically press the unlock button for the key to transmit - not so easy in Tesco when the key is in your pocket). This is potentially much harder to notice than dodgy guys standing nearby when you park and then lock *.

* I don't know exactly how it works but quite why an encryption system would be designed so that stealing the "lock" code would allow you to unlock later is completely beyond me. Stealing unlock, fair enough but that makes it harder in practice and if I designed the system I would make the unlock code expire after 30 seconds so it couldn't ever be re-used - no need to ever divulge the private encryption key either. If this is really the case, whoever designed it should be shot.

looks like its more serious than initially thought - thieves are smashing the windows and accessing the OBD ports to create new keys without the alarm going off. A 1M youtube video is currently making the rounds and generating some news on the internet about this..

makes you wonder just how secure BMWs are if it's this easy to create new keys and worrying that the alarm isn't going off when windows are smashed...

Anything can be stolen. That's what insurance is for.

I just hope if somebody steals my truck they destroy it. Drive it into the lake. Set it on fire. I don't want it back after they joyride in it.
