No reason to go down to 17"

we have the 19" M Sport for summer (pissed BMW didn't offer performance summer tires, so we just left the all seasons on).

For winter we went with 18" and Blizzak WS60 tires, no reason to go to 17", doesn't look right, especially with M Sport or 35i in general. Its a heavy car, with all wheel drive and snow tires, there isn't going to be any performance difference in going 17" vs 18" In fact you might be looking at the same width of tires either way! 225/235 can fit on 18" I just ordered some 18X8.5 wheels for my 335i and am putting 225/45 tires on it.

as long as you keep the outside diameter of the tires as close as possible to the stock tires it doesn't really matter if you go with 17" or 18" wheels. I'm going with 18" for my winter set because I think the 17" will look to small.

The diameter of the 245/45/19 is 27.68 " so if you went with 17" I would go with 225/60/17 which is 27.62" the 235/55/17 is 27.17" which will through off you speedometer a little.

If you go with 225/45/18 the outside diameter will only be 25.97 which is over 3/4 of an inch smaller. This is going to mess up your speedometer. For 18" the 245/50/18 is 27.64" which is about the same as the stock 19" wheels

Hi, I'm new to the x3 world, just ordered mine for delivery in December. What I would like to know is, is it true that if you don't fit the correct size of tyre it can damage the car? The reason I ask is that I have a set of wintrac 4 225/55/18 and was wondering if I could use them or do I need to buy a winter setup from BMW which use 245/50/18?

the 225/55/18 tires have an diameter of 27.74 which is .10 inch larger than the 245/50/18 so those are probably ok to use, but you have to check the offsets and bolt pattern of the rims they are on to make sure they are ok. If the offset is wrong or the tires are to large they can make contact with other parts of your vehicle which could cause damage.

Thanks for that. I know that the wheels I have will not fit however I did not want to spend more money on tyres if I didn't need to. I have heard so much about this so called problem with tyre sizes and issues if you don't fit star rated tyres I was just a bit concerned.

As I went to couple of local tire shop they came is better to get narrow tires in the winter as they recommend 17" cause it could go with 225... also talked with Tirerack's rep. he came 17" or 18" either one is good. So I guess is all about the look.. right?

Hard to choose..!

Welcome Davie, JC's are doing a deal on Pirelli 245/50/18 on 307 alloys for 1800 at the moment.
That's 400 less than the advertised price

Cheers for that. I will look into that. On another point Broch, I have never driven the 35d, I only had a run out in the 30d, is there a big difference between them. On paper there doesn't seem to be a lot, however that might not be the same on the road.

I test drove the 3.0d and thought it was pretty good, but changed my order to the 35d when I heard they would be available from last October.
Glad I did, as it's a totally different engine. Mated with the auto gearbox, it really is sublime

When you expecting your one?

JC's hope to have it to me this year. They say it should be here end November, but going on the time frame they quoted I think it will be into December. I used to have a E91 335D but that was the 286hp engine, that was nice to drive, hope the x3 will be the same.
