Change up
I'm thinking of changing my 2.0 msport to a 3.0 msport after only a year. Is this crazy? Car is worth 9k less after a year. But I do crave the extra POWER !!

Do it! Do it! Do it!...
Honestly - it is worth it. I had a 330d for six years and there was no way I would go down to a 2.0d. I am sooo happy that I didn't - especially seeing that the 2nd hand cost was not that great. Really happy with mine - was getting 42MPG on school run and the other day was getting 52.3MPG when cruising at 60Mph. It is so fast in sport mode. very very quick, you can beat most things on the road. Its certainly recommended. __________________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2013 3.0d X3 M-sport Deep Sea Blue, Black Leather, Xenons, DIRAC Professional Sound sytem, Pro Nav, 19" Wheels, Tinted windows, Folding Mirrors, PDC, ASS, DAB Radio, Aluminium trim inc roof bars |

Why not just throw a 'tune' on the 20D?

I myself have been aching for the XD3 .. but I do find the 30D very capable.

I'm still pondering getting one of these myself.. 220+bhp instead of 184, not to be sniffed at...

Other people who have tested the 3.0d vs 3.5d say they are very similar so I don't think there is a major difference. Yes - there is a difference - there has to be, but its no where near the difference between 2.0d and 3.0d. IMO 3.0d is more than quick enough for the size of the car - I have 2700 miles on the clock and it will open out a lot more. If I was buying again, I will certainly test the 3.5d just to see what it is like, and who knows, I may be sold. The main thing is - we all love the car no matter what engine is in it. I have thoroughly enjoyed embarrassing hot hatches and large exec Mercs and Audis with big engines as they have had to move over as they cannot keep up. Certainly pleased with the 53MPG I got the other day on a long 100 mile trip - now - bet you cant get that in a 3.5d |

The 35D over the 30D is a "nice to have" which if it's not too expensive is worth doing. I sometimes find my 30D is little unpredictable in terms of whether I get only a good rather than a great shove from it. This is down to the single turbo and narrow power band. The 35D has more instantaneous power on demand.
Also if I get another X3 I need some differences to keep it interesting.

I know what you mean about the responsiveness. I find that it is a lot more responsive when fully warmed up. Mind you - mine revs quite nicely - I do know that they reprogrammed the car post 2011 due to people complaining about the lag and it being sluggish.

I got 44.2mpg from my 35d on a run up north, but it's still only a month old... I think the nicest difference between the 4 and 6 pot diesels is the refinement. They are very smooth. I'm not saying the 20d isn't smooth, but you can notice the difference. The X3 35d is quick, but the 30d engine is also quick. Both are more than quick enough for a car of its class.

I'm going to wait for the LCI. Then I get the bonus of a bigger engine and a better looking car!

I had a 330d for six years and that is why I went for the 3.0d Quick question for people who know more than me - I looked at the engine last night and on top it says in big letters Twin Power Turbo - now - like most others - I thought the 3.0d was single turbo and 3.5d was twin turbo - does anyone know why? |
