That is interesting... the US tag on it is surprising as well. Why would they develop an M engine specifically for the US?

In answer to the inferiority of the V6, they fail to provide the smooth power of a V8 or an I6. This is because the V6 is like having a pair of 3 cylinder engines. Since there are 4 strokes the uneven number of cylinders creates an imbalance that needs to be compensated for using a balance shaft. Also, since the I6 has a single bank it has half the camshafts and valve train gears so it has less friction.

That was initial rumor..
This tri-turbo is going to be a nightmare to repair and train mechanics for.
I'd sit oiut first 2 years of it's production to see how reliable the engine is..
For sure it will be a monster in power and torque..

Exactly. Maybe we could add six computers to better control "emissions" as well. Who in their right mind is going to buy something this complex, likely to fail, and be a nightmare out of warranty?

I would! I like the size of the X3 and could always use more power and torque. I need to tow dirtbikes to the unloading point.

Unless BMW will let me buy a diesel with the M Sport package, this would be the winner.

However, as I have said in the past, I don't think more displacement is needed. I believe that 150hp/L is not only achievable by M Division, but in fact they will be blowing well past that figure in the coming generations of their engines. Current rumor suggests that the next generation of non-M BMW engines will be designed for up to about 136hp/L. To me it would be foolish to bet against 150hp+ from the M Division. In fact, I would not be surprised to see a them hit 170hp/L from their imminent turbo I4 engine.

When you think about it, Mitsubishi had a 150hp/L I4 some fifiteen years ago, right? Probably more, even. How is logical to believe M cannot match that today?
I believe Mitsubishi gone upto 200hp/liter in one of the EVOs. There was a massive lag though... More power/liter means more boost which means more lag. That could be limiting factor even though there are ways of reducing the lag.

Also, you have good points about my previous on using V6 to create more interior room.

Thanks for posting this Mark!

I posted about this about a year and half ago...

Excited to see it come to life, after many years of R&d.

I have been waiting for BMW to build a real M class version since I got my first X3 in 07. I recently saw the RS3 Audi at their website and can't believe they wont offer that here in the US.

At least with this we can have a daily driver that will beat the snot off the wise azz kid down the street with the modded rice burner.

I can say I will be first in line when they deliver one of these to any dealer with 50 miles of my house.

Hopefully they will be smart and reinitiate offering this X3 with a MT.

The ever-pressuring government policy on Fuel economy.
It is kind of pathetic the whole aspect of global warming. We have politicians that think Global warming exist; when in reality our government is funneling money to a bunch of, shall I call them thieves/idiots that lobbies for more laws, rules, and regulation.

Yep. This is where I could see BMW innovation making the difference. It could very well be that this alledged tri-turbo setup could be one way of mitigating the inherrent lag that typically plagues high-specific-output turbo setups.

I believe the EU policy is just as strict if not stricter at the moment. Furthermore that reasoning doesn't make much sense. The N54 is a dated engine in terms of CO2 emissions---- theres a reason they replaced it with the N55. So the specific US spec engine wouldn't be to save on emissions... I can't think of any good reason for a individualized US spec N54.

Iwould be down for a AWD XM3...Right now my 135i is totlally useless in the winter for me with a long driveway (800ft) and a trek to work,,,si in the winter i use my Honda CRV with 145,000 miles on it to get around and the 135i for fun drives....but very soon i will need another AWD vehicle so the X3M will be in my driveway if they build it,,,,Yea, agreed with a manual!!!!!!! Here that BMW..with a MANUAL.....

I say it will be a V6, and that was my very initial thought, other than dreaming of DI S65. The V6 will not only be good for lowering costs but also for BUZZ, smething that BMW likes very much. Remember the M3 E92 rumoured to get a V8? Now it is eaven more, a V6. BMW will just prove that they can also build V6. BMW M broke there Religion, M SUV, M Automatic, M AWD, and now M V6. Let it continue to M Diesel. This is what BMW wants. For this very reason they'll put a V6.
We are going to say: "BMW failed." When we'll test drive the car we'll say: "I never thought it was possible, this is the best car the world has ever seen (after the M3 EVO E30 LOL)."

No. At best that is highly debatable, see my post from earlier on this.

Every company likes "buzz", but you don't build business cases around it. You build business cases around product viability, and then build buzz around the product through marketing. That's just how it works.

Flat 6? That term is associated with horizontally opposed engines like those from Subaru or Porsche. Leftlane is reporting a straight six (also known as an inline six), not a flat six.

Ha, they changed their article, I know it said Flat six last night which is why I was a little shocked.

Nice. I actually thought about that possibility just as I hit "submit", but decided to just let it ride, figuring you'd let me know if that was the case.

Oh well, it happens. Blogs tend to be pretty error prone I notice - it is what it is.
