Lightbulb To UK owners is 2.0d weedy with Auto option?

Hi

Has anyone test drove/or own the 2.0 diesel with the 8speed Auto.. If so is it weedy or does it drive well? does it have enough power?

Hi chuckpowers, for what its worth, i've driven an E90 manual 330D touring for the last 4 years and test drove the X3 20d 8 speed auto for half a day before ordering one. I expected it to be a disappointment in comparison but although it doesn't have the torque or power of the 3.0d, for a larger car with nearly 25% less power, i was really impressed with its performance. The 8 speed auto box seems well matched to the engine and was a nice change from the manual in my 3.0d which is quire hard work in traffic with a heavy clutch and not the smoothest gearbox. However, we'll see how it compares to the 3.0d when it finally arrives and is loaded with people and luggage. The 330d still had plenty of performance and economy even under a heavy load. Just hope ive not made a mistake by not waiting for the 30d engine.

I have driven the above car and it's far from weedy, it is very impressive and has plenty of power for me.

8 speed auto is a must for me and wins hands down versus my E60 520d manual after test drive

Also driven the F11 (new 5 series touring) with 8 speed auto and 20d engine and its very good

Surely the 3.0d with 8 speed auto (Std in the UK) will be an amazing blast. Helpfully I have one on order for Aug! ;-) And only 7% less efficient than the 2.0d

If the 30d was available to order on release I would have had it (it will be awsome) although im sure 20d will be just dandy for me

Drove a manual X3, it was pretty quick. Will be even better with auto, less fluffing around. Also stop/start traffic is a pain with manual.

Although I'm not from the UK I can also confirm that the 8 speed auto drives excellent!

I come from a Volvo V50 T5 (230HP) which has a very old fashioned auto gearbox that loses a lot of the torque in the gearbox and I was pleasantly surprised with the acceleration of the X3 20D auto.

Don't expect too much above 70 MPH though.

+1 re. stop start and manual. It only kicks in when you release the clutch. I quite like the control of the stop start based on how much pressure you apply to the brake

manual is cheaper though and very likely more fuel efficient in real mpg

offset pedals might be more of problem with the manual but no-one has said so who owns one

re. performance, it's pretty impressive. I was pleasantly surprised

If you are worried about performance some tuning will bring it up to 218 hp and 450 Nm.

I had the same question. Test drove a 2.0d and the auto. Great!
Was never going to go manual due to lack of open road down south.

Next question - is 2.0d weedy dressed in M sport package. Possibly but that's what I liked the look of.

But if you are going for auto, fully loaded options, fat tyres and large passengers then 3.0d deffo.

Hit the kick-through and it goes like a rocket - scared me silly when I first did it.

Gulp! Is there a speed limiter on the 3.0d? Hope the brakes are up to it too!

Yes and the brakes will be bigger too.

I'd suggest getting Evolve to remap the 30d post running in. Then you will feel some serious performance They can even remove the limiter for Autobahn fun.
