2013 X3 20d Turbocharge Diesel, any good?

Hi, dealer only carries X3 diesel. Specs are: 2.0 liter inline 4 cyl. Turbocharged. 8 speed Auto with Steptronic. 184 hp. 0-100 km in 8.5 sec. City 6.8 l/100km. Highway 5.6 l/100km. 6.0 liter per 100km combined.

Was hoping for gas but only diesel is available. Is diesel any good? Never had a diesel before. Worried about excessive noise and vibration not to mention the start/stop feature. The plus side is power and greater mileage.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe a test drive can help

Hi I drive the 2.0D, I find it great, sometimes however I feel that a bit extra pull is missing. But thats because I often drive it in Eco mode which reduces the rev range before changing up.
I can put it in sport and its really responsive.
I get about 42-43 mpg which is pretty good and I'm very happy with the car.

Funnily enough I'm in Florida at the minute and driving a rental dodge nitro getting 16.5mpg and now I know why I drive a 2.0d at home. Much better all round.

Meant to say no excessive noise/vibration etc its really good have a test drive.

How do you get a 2013 X3 2.0 diesel? I only see 28i and 35i models being offered in the US.

I love my 2.0D (especially in sport mode). I turn the start/stop off.

Yes, given the choice, I would go for the 2.8i/3.5i (petrol not an option for an X3 in the UK, but I have driven both the 328i and 528i) or the 3.0D (couldn't justify the extra cost). Surely you have a choice of dealer?

I've copped some flak from this forum and elsewhere by saying what I'm about to say but - in my opinion - the 20d is the least impressive of the engines in the F25 X3 (although reading about this X3 18d 2WD available in some markets we may now have a new contender for that honour). BMW's 20d engine is relatively noisy - particluarly compared with the equivalent 2.0l TDI Audi engine - and almost as noisy as Volvo's notoriously noisy D5 diesel. In my opinion the 20d struggles to move the 1.7-1.8 tonne weight of the X3. Bottom line is that there is simply nothing particularly special about the X3 20d compared with similar offerings from Audi and Volvo other than the badge on the front and back.

Not sure exactly where your location is, but if its available in your market the 30d is a far better proposition. Not only does its performance piss all over the 20d (as you would expect) but probably comes close to even out-performing the 35i petrol/gas X3. All with very little sacifice in real life fuel economy over the 20d. The 30d is just so effortless compared with the 20d. Again as I've said in previous posts - the 20d vs 30d comparison is a no-brainer. In contrast the 30d vs 35d is not so clear cut.

My opinion - if the 30d is available in your market save up the extra and go for it.

However regardless of what I or anyone else has written here, as Renaud as suggested - go for a test drive and make up your own mind. Only suggestion with any test drive - if at all possible have a back-to-back test drive of a 20d and 30d.

The 20d is very noisy (from the outside - it's quiet inside). If I was buying now I would spend the extra and get a 30d. The fuel economy is almost the same and you can drive it conservatively but have a little extra when required -auto also standard but you factor that into the price difference assuming you want an auto.

This is coming from someone who has driven the 20d for almost 2 years now. Still love the car but given the choice (I had no choice as no 30d when I ordered) I would recommend the 30d over the 20d

Well the 20d is the only choice if you want to drive manual tho. I was disappointed the 3.0 didn't have the option at all!

184PS not enough?

Having just sold an XC60 D5 I can verify that the BMW 2L diesel is nowhere near as noisy as the 5 pot Volvo. This car is not a performance choice and with the cost of diesel in the UK it has plenty of power and engine response for me.

As has been stated, test for yourself and buy according to your own needs and circumstances.

I love mine.

Little noisy compared to the 3.0d but still great!

I also have a 2.0D for the last 2 1/2 months now. Love it. I have the automatic box and the combination is really good.
The option to change the Character of the engine via the sport/comfort/eco-pro modes make a big difference. As you can choose in what "style" you want to drive in.
Very happy so far.

Unfortunately only the 20d is available in my neck of the woods . Dealers here only bring in preconfigured X3s which, sadly enough, are not equipped with performance goodies. It doesn't have the sports+/comfort/ecopro controls. No DHP. No M-sport package or Nav. No cameras. No power folding side mirrors. Also, it's impractical to custom order an X3 so I'm stuck with what's available.

What the high end preconfigured X3s here have are: 20d 8 speed Steptronics, Sunroof, Nevada leather seats, iDrive with a 6" screen, X-line package, Combox, Cargo rails/nets/bin, Zenon lights (non-adaptive) , basic PDC (no camera) and 19 inch Wheels. Dealer also says that since it is an 8 speed Steptronic, it also has Sports suspension. Don't know if this is true.

What do you guys think of this per configured package? Also is the 19 inch wheels with RFTs any good for ride comfort? We have some bad roads here and there.

Thanks in advance for your comments and insights.

Peter- your location shows as Ct which I presume is Connecticut USA. But BMW only offer petrol(gas) X3s in the USA not diesel. What is your correct location and can you post a web link to your local dealer.

That's not the reason it has a sports suspension. 19" + sports suspension is no probs on the ride. In fact, I much prefer it to be more connected and less floaty. Quite an odd combination of options. 19" 309s on an SE are expensive, as is sunroof, xline and Xenons, and you get all of these but no pro nav.

And as per philtrick, where on earth are you?!

Go to a different neck of the wood.
Get a 35d or 30d.
Forget about 19" rims.
