Engine sound from the interior of 2015 X3 sDrive28 MSport

I took delivery of my 2015 X3 sDrive28 MSport about 2 months ago. I love the car. Drives great, accelerates great. However, the engine sound from the interior is very un-BMW'ish under normal driving and full throttle. Since its the N20 2.0 4-banger, it sounds like a 4-banger - even dare to say it sounds kind of like a Honda Civic (I know, insult!)

I test drove a 428i with the same N20 over the weekend and I was shocked how great that car sounded from the interior. With the same N20 motor, it sounded like a true 6 cyl, and in sport mode, was able to hear that awesome 'dumping' sound between hard shifts in the exhaust. Despite the exhaust, the motor truly made a completely different sound, deeper and throatier. I was almost convinced it was a 6 cyl. I literally had to step out of the car to inspect the rear 428i badging.

Anyone know how this was achieved onthe 428i? And does anyone know of an intake/exhaust mod to make it sound similar on the X3 28? Has anyone tried?

-Thanks

I just took delivery of a 2015 X3 sDrive28i MSport this past weekend, and while I love the car as well, I've already been researching aftermarket mods that'll improve the performance and sound.

From what I gather, there's M Performance parts slated for the X4 (which may possibly fit the X3?). I'm hoping there's an M Performance exhaust or something similar.

I haven't experienced the N20 in anything other than the X3 so I found it interesting that it sounds more refined in the 428i.

Thats because the 428i has the Active Sound Device that enhances the engine sound throught the sopeakers:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...72&hg=65&fg=25

Maybe you can add the ASD device to your X3 and tehn code it correctly.

Engine sound pipe thru the speaker system, that's rich I think the M5 have the same system. For those who want their 4 banger to sound better without spending the money for a M4, here is a CD of Corvette engine note you can pop into your CD player in for cheap money

It should sound something like this because the other one was a full system and from what the description of this one says it is just the muffler ... but I can't wait to put it on my car! I have a 2013 model year X3 so the first year the N20 was out and yeah the N20 doesn't sound great but overall I love my car even if it doesn't have the best sound.

Thanks mge. Please post videos of your x3 after the exhaust install. Im really interested to hear the sound inside and outside the vehicle. I'm interested in buying an aftermarket exhaust as well and your experience will help me with my decision.

Monsma, thanks for the link to realoem. As you indicated the 428i has the active sound design module but the x3 doesn't appear to have it. There is quite a debate as to whether it actually introduces artificial engine sounds into the cabin. We know on the M's, it does. However, it's being debated whether it's doing the same on the lower end bmw's.

Btw, I also drive a 228i over the weekend and it sounded great as well. Same n20 motor, with the deep, throaty roar. Awesome sound. Why didn't it make it into the x3?!? Frustrating.

^ its the same reason why they don't have any aftermarket accessories for the X3. AK i have done a bunch of mods like tow hook license plate, carbon fiber mirror and gear selector, x6 m racing stripes ... if you want to know what I have done let me know

Looks like you have to cut the bumper to get the quads...would have to look for a quality installer not to bugger the job. Considering this lets see how yours turns out.

New Exhaust Installed

Just got back the car after getting the new supersprint exhaust installed. It looks amazing and sounds great. Didn't have time to make a video of the sound and take a bunch of photos because of exams but I should have a video by next week.

So I finally made the video and am currently busy with exams so it was a bit rushed.
It only has 100 miles on the exhaust and should sound deeper and fuller as it wears in.

nice install. very professional. in NY we have Aidesigns in Westchester that installs supersprint exhausts. I am setting up an appt to have mine done in Jan/Feb time frame.

i did, however, expect a much deeper growl. it really doesn't sound much different from stock. how about a few hps? do you notice a slightly stronger pull? i believe they rated to about 20 extra horses.

does look sweet. all X3s should have that look.
