2015 X3 Drivetrain Malfunction, police siren sound and missfire
Just had oil/filter service done by a private licensed mechanic here in Toronto area.
Next day my wife drove and saw the Drivetrain Malfunction message on screen along with Police car siren sound with increasing volume as you accelerate and also car starts misfiring when it goes around 60 KM/h and above. Ironically this just started after the oil/filter change. FYI...spark plugs were changed last year in Feb, 2020 Please help me learn the possible reasons or DYI easy solutions if any before I should take it to a shop. I am not a techie at all. Thanks! |

Welcome to the forum...
As a starting point, read the error codes(s) with a proper diagnostic scanner to find what the computer(s) are complaining about. |

If the charge pipe is not secure, you'll get the drivetrain malfunction light and sometimes a whistling sound. Check the lower driver's side of the motor and make sure it is on all the way.

Would you recommend a particular and economical scanner?
Is there a possibility that the oil filter used or inappropriate closing of that filter assembly could be a suspect? Oil filter is the only change that was made before the problem at hand appeared. Thanks! |

As the car has just been worked on you need to look under the hood and underneath, look for anyhing loose or out of place, not properly connected. If you are not familiar with cars then you will need to take it to a proper BMW specialist.

I'd start by checking the oil level in iDrive. Is it full? If so, then it's not likely the oil change did anything. Since you don't have any car knowledge, it's probably not helpful to to speculate about things or use terms like charge pipe if you don't know what a charge pipe is. So, check he oil level, if it's not full, go back to where you got it done and complain that your engine may be damaged, although you should also have an oil pressure light on. If it is full, take it to an independent that works on BMWs. Don't waste your money on a scanner because it does not sound like you could address what it would tell you.

OK, I have got the same mechanic check it again and the sound and no power after around 60km, he says it is the Turbocharger that is the culprit. I don't know the cost of that yet as this is weekend. He is going to give me estimate on Monday.
Do you guys know how much this Turbocharger may cost and/or if it is advisable to buy from online sources if price justifies the difference compared to what he may come up with? Thanks for your all's comments and answers...! |

I remember reading of someone having the drive train malfunction error after doing an oil change. It ended up being the oil filter cap did not have the plastic cage in the middle where the filter clips on. It got stuck to the old filter. He ended up replacing the plastic piece on the cap and the drive train malfunction went away.
Either check it yourself or have your mechanic check it out. |

I agree with the above. You either need another opinion or you need to give us details on how he decided the turbo is the culprit. How did he decide that? What is wrong with it? Is this person a specialist in BMWs? You say he is "licensed." That doesn't really mean anything. In a city as large as Toronto there will be numerous BMW specialist shops. I suggest you go to one.
