Officially BMW states 2000km as break-in period; in practice I found with all my other (non-BMW) vehicles to stabilize fuel consumption from 10 000+ km's. Also depends whether you use on-board computer reading/s or note it manually on app like Fuel Log 3 (i-Phone) or Internet site like Spritmonitor.de (also available in English) - eventually also traffic conditions and of course the weight of the (R) foot/boot...Regards.

I have 2000km and I see about 11.1 l/100km. It went down considerably when I started going on the highway. I would say that my highway kms are about 30% of the total mileage of the car. And yes, I take care to drive conservatively, but it's hard - this is a BMW we're talking about after all... I respect the speed limits, but that does not prevent me from having some fun in twists and bends (especially on ice). Also, the initial minutes after a cold start are a high consumption moment, so if you drive it for a few kms then stop it, take it 1 hour later, drive it for a few kms etc., your consumption will go way up.

Highway
5000km on my car. I did a 700km highway trip in a tank of gas and was averaging 9.4L/100KM. It is still higher than what they clam.

What's your avg speed? Given that I'm mostly within the city, the Avg speed I have is at 26km/h which is giving me 15L/100km of gas consumption or about 400km on a tank.
The gas reserve warning comes up at 375ish KM in, and I stretch it to 400km before filling up. Anyone else chugging this much gas? |

I'm approaching 1500km and so far it's been 9.1l/100km. My average speed is 39km/hr...I do quite a bit of hwy driving; now mind you there is also quite a bit of stop & go traffic.
I'm not complaining at all considering our other car (Mazda 3) averages 9.8l/100km. I was honestly expecting about 11l/100km on average since I don't believe those reported fuel consumption figures by the mfg, so I couldn't be happier. Now we do use premium gas...94 grade I believe. |

On my 28i....I'm getting about 750km per tank on highway and just a little over 500km in the city. I have no idea what that converts to in L/100km though. I have just over 14,000kms on the car as of today.

I'm at 860 km in, had to fill up at the 402km, and 816km precisely. I normally drive a bit hard with my accelleration, braking and cornering, but haven't been doing so during the "break in period". Do you guys think its worth bringing this to the attention of the dealer?
