Evoque (dynamic) vs. x3i35 (msport)

Hey guys,

I'm sure I might get a little bit of a biased opinion on this website, but was wondering if you could give me any advice on the above cars. I think I've made the decision 10+ times and then decided otherwise.

Evoque - better looking (interior as well, but odd color options in the dynamic)

x3 - engine
- maintenance

Thoughts?

I might be wrong here but isn't the Evoque a lot smaller inside?

It's actually not bad inside despite what you would imagine with the slopping roof. Less luggage space but not significantly so.

Evoque looks good but you will need the Evoque Autobiography Dynamic version to get close to X3 performance. However in UK the Autobiography version will be over £50k so very expensive alongside the X3.

Thought about an evoque too. For me, the relationship I have with my BMW dealer and excellent quality of my previous 3 series was more than enough to keep me from rolling the dice on an evoque. They have also had some criticism for unpredictable emergency handling that I would look into more carefully if I were buying.

It's a fun choice; think about which you really want

I think the Evoque is an attractive car, but a bit too small. And if you care about performance, the X3 35i destroys the Evoque. Quoting 0-60 times is usually pointless, but in this case, they say something - it's about 5.5s for the X3 and 7.1s for the Evoque. Handling on the bimmer wins too, and so does practicality, unless you are specifically looking for something smaller. Get the X3 with the dynamic dampers and you won't regret it.

Thank you guys for the suggestions. I'm with you on the maintenance and reliability (not to mention the two engines are not in the same league). I think my one "hang-up" is the novelty and realitive rarity of the Evoque vs. the BMW.

I did have a Discovery 3 from new back in 2007, spacewise it was great but went back to Stratstone in Wolverhampton 12 times in 12 months for various problems. It got to the point where the service guys there knew my voice over the phone!

I eventually got rid vowing not to have another LR

The dealer made it easy for us....
Went to see the Evoque and was met by compete indifference, and could not test drive because they were selling so well!
Went to BMW and took out the X1, X3 & X5 over a weekend.... made it an easy choice and never looked back!
But yes the Evoque looked nice but limited headroom in the back.
X3 drives like nothing else I have ever had.. great performance and economy...

I was in same situation. I did a test drive in November 2013 with Evoque 2.2D, 190 hp, 6 speed automatic (now they change to new ZF 9 speed). The car is beautiful, my wife love it. I did not like particularly 6 speed automatic, but I believe this situation is changed now. Also being in Europe we appreciate mostly diesel engines ( price of fuel here is more then double comparing with US prices). Evoque is using a modified PSA diesel, which is if far from BMW engines in terms of fuel economy. Still I believe that Evoque is a better looking car, but lack of space and technology ( although has nice LR Terrain Response System) made me choose new X3 LCI model ( which is a very nice looking car now, especially with X-line package). Also Evoque is more expensive, at least in Romania. One more thing which I did not like about Evoque: in brochure the luggage compartment is evaluated at 575 lit ( X3 has 550 lit). I was quite surprise with such large capacity for a small car like Evoque, but it was a marketing trick, they considering 575 lit up to roof line!!!!! Real capacity I think is less than 350 lit, which is not good at all for a family with 2 kids. My advice : go with bmw x3 LCI!!!! I can wait for new X3 LCI to come in showrooms!

What engine does the Evoque have? Here in Australia the only petrol/gas engine available is the Ford 2.0l 4-cylinder turbo engine. How on earth can you compare this with the 35i engine of the X3. If you are going to compare cars (leaving aside the lack of space in the Evoque), surely the comparison should be with the X3 28i.

Tony

ps the X3 28i would still piss all over the Evoque Si4.

Agreed that there is no comparison as far as engines, but I'm considering the top models for both. If I was purely interested in getting a fast car I'd go for the 4 series with 4 wheel drive or some other sport car. However, I'm heavily leaning towards the x3 and pre-ordering the 2015 in April. Not sure when it will be in though.

Good choice with the x3. Agree with all comments; the evoque is the looker, the x3 is the performer. Novelty wears off....already I think the evoque is meh in terms of looks.

I believe that Evoque should be compared with X1,Q3, GLA and not X3, Q5, GLK. Now X1 suffered a new facelift, and it is very nice also and still much cheaper than the Evoque. I read that in 2016 an Evoque XL, together with new "in house" engines will be launched. Until that time BMW is the answer.

Costa, price wise the evoque is very comparable to the x3/q5/glk. On the high end of that price range.

Exterior dimensions are similar too. Inside, I get it, similar to q3 etc. but that's a flaw with the car in terms of what I wanted out of my purchase. Sacrificed for the evoque's good looks! Certainly will appeal to many and nothing wrong with that!

It is difficult at times to compare the Evoque to the x1 or the x3. Price and dimensions wise it is much close to the x3 (if not significantly more price wise). In the i35, there is no comparison with the evoque's 4 cylinder. Either way, the x3 is the undeniable sure things choice where as the Evoque has some new flash, but is inferior in many other aspects.

You made the right choice. Still don't really understand why the Evoque even came under consideration given the vast differences in engines. Would have thought a more suitable comparison with the X3 35i would have been the Q5 3.0 TSFI or the XC60 T6.

Good choice.
It's a while since I made the same decision.
A couple of years on and the X3 is a dream, the Evoque doesn't even come close.
