I've just learned on the french forum that people do side of the road repairs themselves, using Tubeless Tire Repair kits -- so I ordered one to put at the at back of the car, just in case...

Where did you get yours from? I had a puncture on a brand new two day old winter tyre (non RFT) half way on a 1,000 mile journey between UK and Eastern Europe last December and managed to fix it with a similar kit without even taking the wheel off and its still holding now after 4,000 miles. I was lucky to have the kit with me from years back after a trip in the Gulf, as on a Sunday morning all shops/garages were shut so it saved my life! . However, have not been able to find anything similar here in the UK and was under the impression they were banned. Mine is now all used and dried up so need to replace, though having said that I didn't use any glue at all on that last repair as it had dried rock solid in the tube.

I heard some of that stuff is a real pain to clean off the inside of the wheel and it probably kills any TPMS sensor.

I think that we in the US are the only ones who get Direct TPMS sensors inside the wheels. That perhaps explains why some cant code tire pressure and temperature.

Runflat tires need to have direct TPMS, but it can still be code. Some owners in the F10 section have code the pressure and temperature on the i-drive even with the direct TPMS.

Bought that one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200700836940

Obviously there isn't enough im the cartridges to reinflate completely, but that should kick start it for the slow compressor...

Thanks a lot, that’s a great find. The key things are the rubber strips and especially the ‘awl tool’ used to insert the strip/plug; done correctly, the repair will last the life of the tyre, without even using any glue. The C02 cartridges are a joke and would never inflate a car tyre—I think those are meant for a motorbike wheel. I always carry a compressor pump anyway. However, I would still prefer to have the option to carry a spare wheel, rather than the OEM deciding for me .

Noka, you are right, I wouldn’t use that filler stuff either; you can only run the tyre for some 80 miles or so as an emergency till you get a replacement and as you say, the wheel rim itself is often ruined after such a “repair”. My method is to insert a rubber plug, and then re-inflate as normal. Obviously such repairs will only work if the side wall itself wasn’t damaged or punctured

The theory of fitting a plug as a temporary measure sounds good but the practicality of actually fitting one would be a different matter. Side of a road / motorway in the dark with rear tyre puncture? it all sounds a bit dangerous to me.

For me it's only in the case I'm in the hills, with nearest phone coverage 30 miles away. Always have a bit of a phobia about that

This is where runflat tires comes in handy, when you get a flat on a hill, no phone coverage, heavy traffic area, pouring rain outside or in a bad neigborhood.

If RFT continues to improve e.g. lower weight (for lower unsprung weight), increased sidewall strength (for further driving with no pressure), lower cost and if marketed aggressively (using the scenario just described), RFT could win the war against conventional tires.

On the oem contiProContact tires. the runflats are only 3 pound heavier, 30 lb vs 27 lb for non-runflat.

If RFs are so delicate it sort of defeats their purpose. The one and only reason would be so you don't have to deal with the tire in a difficult situation. Looks like I'll be getting a repair kit and Non RFs after these wear. I've run good quality Michelins for on and off road use for over 20 years with excellent results. They hold their pressure. Never had a flat on the road. On three occasions I've come out to the garage to find a flat, they've held pressure with nails and industrial looking razors embedded in them. I'm not a Michelin salesman.

I have a set of these: http://www.dynaplug-uk.com/

The flaw with insurance is that you can only claim on the punctured tyre but you should always be replacing two unless it's a brand new tyre to keep the tread wear even on each side.

You also have to be careful it's not capped at a limit below the very expensive BMW run flat tyre price or you'll have to pay the difference which can be £100+ a pop

Hi Guys......... just picked up my brand new X3 on Monday. Was subjected to a barrage of expensive optional extra's before being able to leave the showroom with my new car.

One of the extra's was tyre insurance cost £499 for three years. A quick check on the 'Event Tyres' website ( a company that comes to your home/office and fits/balances there and then ) whom I have used before and were very good, shows a price of £164 for a fitted Pirelli RFT. Exactly the same tyre that came with my vehicle.

I can purchase 3 tyres for the cost of the insurance at any time.... no limits. Needless to say, I left the showroom with my bank balance intact.

Still getting used to the car but first impressions.......... loving it !!!!

What tyre is that for exactly? You should probably make sure it's a recommended BMW Pirelli. Would have thought it would be nearer £200 at the cheapest

I would also source the tyres and get BMW to fit and balance them as they have better tech and are less likely to damage them - or so I've heard...

of all the extras pushed by the dealer, the tyre insurance was the only one that i took up... i did remember that the cost was just barely above the price of 1 tyre and given that i have had 3 punctures in a 3 yr prior, made economical sense to me..

definitely didn't buy it for 500 quid for sure.. more like 250 - 300

can't remember whether it covered both regular/winters - heard different opinions here

have been using event tyres for quite a few years now .. unfortunately, am getting barely 8k miles on a set...not the X3 though

Do these tyre policies still pay out if you have only 3mm tread left? What's to stop you having a little accident and claiming for 1 of the 2 each time you need to replace front or back tyres because of wear?
