M Sport Steering Wheel

What is the difference between M Sport and Sport steering wheel on X3? I can see that M SSW is definitely not as sexy as in 3 or 5 series, with three narrow spokes and circular center. I wonder why is that? I secretly hope they will include the same M SSW as in other series.

I think the MSport steering wheel is a tiny bit thicker with bigger thumb grip and made with better leather.

Last week I had a X3 2014 loaner and it had a reasonably thick steering wheel, a wheel about as thick as that in my Z3 except the Z3 wheel is leather covered. It was also a wheel I would have not given a second thought about if I also did not have the M Sport wheel in my X3. I perceive the extra thick leather M Sport wheel to be consequentially thicker and certainly more satisfying to hold. This is very obviously a personal opinion thing but difference, IMO, is sufficiently significant that the next BMW I buy will have the thick M Sport steering wheel as I will not be satisfied with a thinner non-leather wheel. BTW, to be fair, my wife likes the thinner Z3 wheel.

The M wheel in my 2011 X3 is nearly identical to that in my 2008 M5, with just a few extra buttons as the X3 has the updated IDrive. Though cant remember if the X3 wheel has the M color stitching.

Your saying the latest M wheel in the X is different than latest 3/5?

That's the one I want, but it's from 5 and 3 series! I can see only this one below as M Sport in X3 configurator, no diff from generic:

It's the same generic wheel photo listed as "M Sport" as in other sites, UK and DE for example.

There have a few complaint about the quality of the new MSport wheel. I am sure it will eventually trickle down to the X3 MSport. Seems like the X3 is always the last to get all the new features.

Well ... the X3 is the first car to get the new 2.0d lump, I believe. I'll take a more powerful, more efficient and quieter engine over a new steering wheel design.

The wheel is already designed, they just need to use it in X3. Even Active-Soccer-Mum-Tourer has a proper M wheel. I cannot believe they are charging 300 bucks for generic looking wheel with M logo slapped on top.
