Side window tint for 2012 X3?
Has anyone tinted the front side windows on their X3? I want to get the same color/darkness as is on the back passenger windows.
Anyone had this done? Thoughts? Thanks.

I put Formula One Pinnacle 35 on the front sides and Pinnacle 15 on the rear sides, rear, and sunroof. Color blend looks great to me and the tint gives a bit more sporty of a look to it. In VA the tint on the front sides is limited (and windshield all but prohibited), but the rest aren't restricted on SUVs.

Just for the sake of interest - here in the UK it is illegal to tint front windows (side or windscreen) beyond a certain point. Side windows can (I think) have a 5% tint but no tinting is allowed on the windscreen save for a dark band along the top.
The argument is that whilst tinting makes life more comfortable for the two days of sunshine we get annually (), it makes it more difficult to see other vehicles and pedestrians at night. It is the same for motorcycle riders - they cannot wear a visor on their skid lid that contains more than a small amount of tint - even on a bright day |

Tinting is also illegal in many US states. I've had the 20% tint on the Tahoe pictured above for almost 10 years and I have had 1 $85 tint ticket. Gotta pay to play!!

Attached is my X3 tinted 35 % on the roll downs... Its illegal in Sask too but its a price I am willing to pay to keep the heat out and protect my leather from UV rays.

Does this makes sense to only tint these two windows? I'm thinking that overall heat rejection won't be very effective. Thoughts? (ps- I want to retain good overall visibility out of all the windows, that's why I'm thinking no film on rear side or rear hatch glass..car does not have sunroof) Thanks/Bill Last edited by Wgosma; 05-25-2021 at 02:40 PM.. |

I think the 35% on the fronts would be about as close to the factory colored rear glass as possible...
BUT - keep in mind the factory tinted glass is just a colored glass.... NOT a reflective tint like an applied film provides.... thus not the same heat rejection, nor UV protection. You could add a clear (80%) film to the rear doors and hatch glass so not to make it darker than you want it... but still add the protective value of the film product. win-win |

Bill,
I had a similar scenario as yours in the past, where I wanted a means of blocking heat, and uv, but did not want to ruin my visibility instead of going for DARK tint, I went for a translucent ceramic film by LLUMAR (I forget the exact name of the film, Llumar "AIR"?, I can ask the tint shop if needed). long story short, it WORKS. example, when we'd visit las vegas and if temps were 110+ outside, the tint genuinely made a diff in how much heat my face would feel. (pic of my old lexus, look at the front windshield. you cant even tell it has film) TL;DR = do it, tint the fronts, every little bit helps |

Thanks, the Lexus looks good! And I bet the windshield tint really helped reduce the heat.
This pic is my car BEFORE I removed the tint that the prior owner had applied. Tint all around, none on windshield. I drove it this way for 2+ years but night driving was borderline unsafe, so couple of months ago I removed all tint, I can see out a LOT better, both day and night. I think the front windows were around 15%, pretty dark. Interior heat was very well controlled w/tint. I'm thinking I might just do the front side windows with a good quality ceramic, see how it fares this summer - I know already I need to cut some visible light (and UV) coming thru my driver window. I'm usually driving solo, so rear passenger comfort not big issue. The rear windows have the factory door shades/screens that pull up and lock in place. Don't think shades will cut heat but the do reduce visible light on rear passengers. |
