Oil Temp Range
I bought a new to me 2013 X3 and after a couple of weeks noticed two things - 1. the moonroof creaks which seems to be normal and 2. - the oil temp on my X3 never goes above the 1st quarter mark (see pic below). From all the reading I did, the oil temp should be around the half mark (250 degrees) or slightly higher under normal cases. The problem is this X3 never gets there, even when it was driven over an hour in stop and go.
What are other X3 users seeing? I'll make an appt at the dealer as I still have the warranty but wanted to know if what I'm seeing is "normal" or not. |

Mine (2016 35) runs about halfway between the quarter mark and the 250. Assuming the gauge is linear between 140 and 250 this would imply a running temp of about 200F, which is a pretty normal temp for most cars.
I don't think your car is out of range - it looks to be something like 185F. The manual dumbs it down a bit but it says that anything on the left side of the gauge above the 140 mark is considered a normal operating temp. |

Again, which engine?
Ask the dealer to check for codes on the waterpump and on the thermostat module. While you're at it, ask them to give you a report of all stored codes - there may not be any stored codes available, or you may find something interesting. Never hurts to ask |

If that is the N20 28i that is normal. With a tune the temp only gets to midway between the 1st mark and 250 °F. Since the X3 has a bigger engine bay, the cooling system seems to keep the engine cooler than if the engine was in the 328i or 528i.

I have a 4 cil. petrol engine, but mine never gets higher than between 1/4 and 1/2.
It is Celsius, so that is between 75 and 100 degrees Celsius. I just came back from Germany, and even with high speeds up to 220 kmh (135 mph) it did not even reach the half mark. I think that if the oil would hit the 250 F mark, the oil gets too hot.

I have the 3.0 litre diesel X3 and I find it sits at around 90 degrees C, just below half way once up to normal operating temperatures. It never changes from this position, no matter what the ambient temperature is.

My X3 has the N20 engine. It seems from some of the replies, the N20 does run at a lower temp and what I'm seeing is normal. And that the 3.0 motor does run hotter. When I was originally google the issue, the users who were posting seeing the temp at the 1/2 mark had the 3.0 motor, so I think we have our answer.
Thanks for the replies. I'll also get all stored codes as 02420X3 recommended while I'm at the dealer as well. |

On my wife's 2016 X3 with the N20 2.0T engine, the temps always sits at the 1/4 mark as shown in that picture.
On one occasion, when we were sitting in traffic on a 90 degree day, it went up a little bit to about the 1/3 way mark. |
