All Terrain tires on an F25

So I am considering purchasing an F25. If I do I would like to install a more aggressive all terrain tire to replace the OEM all season run flats for some light duty off roading and use in the snow. I would like the forum members opinion on whether or not this is a ridiculous idea. The other vehicle I'm considering if I don't purchase the F25 is a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Personally, I wouldn't take an F25 offroad, so fitting all terrain tires is not relevant. If it's offroading you want to do, go with the Jeep. The new GC is a nice unit and certainly can handle the rough stuff. Just my opinion.

The new JGC was one of my first choices but the wife really wanted a new X3 since it was for her and not me. With that being said we will take ours off road and actually are planning a trip to Moab and Canyonlands this fall with the X3. It will see plenty of off road driving on that trip. I think it will do just fine.

Concerning the switch to non run flat A/T tires you'll need to keep in mind that a puncture or gash could be a big problem without a spare out in the remote country. I bet it would look awesome with some BFG TA KOs on it!!

I am not saying the X3 cannot go offroad, just saying that I wouldn't. Personal call, just want to be clear on that.

Oh I hear ya. And I agree with your assesment that if your main goal is off roading the Jeep is definitely a better option along with a few other SUVs.

We won't be taking it down any narrow trails that may give us the undesired pin striping! Nor will I let the wife play in any mud bogs.

The beauty of Moab and surrounding areas is that the trails are wide open and the sand stone's traction is unbelieveable.

Would be cool if there were some run flat all terrain tires on the market.

I'm also planning "soft" off road adventures in the X3 and have been looking for a more aggressive run flat tire. So far no luck. I spoke the person who did the Drive Experience. He told me that he demo Hummers in the 90's and also demo an X3 at BMW dealer that was former Land Rover dealer. The X3 went through the Land Rover off road demo course really well. He felt that the X3 was a very capable off roader and that it could be improved with a better all terrain tires. Keep in mind that a good all terrain tire will have a more aggressive tread and strong side wall. The run flats do have a strong side wall.

I also look at the Jeep and Ford Explorer, but wanted a smaller car with great handling and good mpg, since most of my driving will be on normal roads.

Garage List
You want a Jeep Cherokee. No matter what the marketing department says, the X3 is not designed for off road use.

It all depends on how aggressive you want to get. Hell, as a geology student I used to take my Capri II "off road".

Definition of "off road" is critical here. Could easily be talking apples and oranges.

I plan once I purchase to put all terrain for light offroading in national parks, see the X3 review in the African bush review
