The CA also had a sheet that showed part numbers and compatible phones showing 390 as the media adapter for iPhone 4.

Dear Cactus, not every X3 can use this adapter. If you are going to buy this adapter you will also need:

ZOX – Package (6NR – Apps & 6NF – Smartphone Integration)
609 – Navigation with iDrive
6NL - (BMW Assist with enhanced Bluetooth and USB)
(the 609 and 6NL are maybe included in your Tech pkg.)
In the UK these prerequisites translate to Professional Multimedia Package and 6NF in case anyone needs to know. Quite why 6NF at £70 isn't already part of the "Professional Multimedia" package is a mystery. I slipped up here and didn't order 6NF.

One point on the above is that you don't actually need 6NR to use the media snap-in adaptor. Without 6NR but with the other prerequisites, you'll have the ability to play music and see album artwork on an iPhone whilst its in the cradle.

No it just has an extra "-02" at the end of the part number. It still says 84212218390 on the part itself and the box.

So your adapter is the part number 84212218390, but it is for iPhone 4 and is media adapter which is disguised 84212199392.

How come BMW was suggesting 84212199392 media number and then they put that other number on this adapter? Can you please confirm that you got this adapter in an original BMW package?

I have posted a picture of the box which shows it came from BMW. I also posted a screenshot from bmwusa.com that shows it is the correct part number. And this is the info I got from bmwparts.com

"The 390 part # you received is correct for the iPhone 4 media snap in...the threads online were incorrect as BMW just released these within the US with the new part #s. We updated your order for you, and only charged you the 180.00 that the wrong part originally cost...even though the correct 390's are 210.00 through our site.

Thanks again,

Ev
getBMWparts.com"

It looks to me like BMW changed the part number and now the 390 is the correct part.

Was nice that they sorted it for you and are not charging you more. Good customer service.

Yes I agree. People should know that I had a good buying experience from them and that they did the right thing and responded to my inquiry quickly.

So, now that several folks probably have this snap-in, what is the consensus? Worth it? I currently have a Droid but plan to switch to iPhone 4 very soon, and then me and my wife will both have iPhone 4's. Seems in that case that taking full advantage of the integration makes sense (yes, I have 6NR and Tech Package).

My understanding of the benefits of the cradle are:

1. Better cellular reception via the shark fin
2. Ability to use the Genius and similar functions for music
3. Enhanced iPhone/iPod look and feel in iDrive
4. Video playback (while in park)
5. Better Internet Radio (i.e. Pandora) integration

Am I missing anything or incorrect on the above? Any reviews/opinions from users welcome.

Yes, all correct to my knowledge. You've paid for 6NR so go for it. What are you waiting for?

Using a cradle also means no USB cable hanging around, somewhere to put the iphone when connected, and that the USB socket in the armrest is free to use for anything else like an iPod or flash drive

all of them ?

I thought this adapter already came with bmw apps ?

So i guess there is a power connecter in the armrest in every X3 equiped with one (all) of the options above?

Yes, jlr_1304, I have all these options in order to make my iPhone 4 to work with this additional media adapter.

I like the use of adapter better then going with another device via USB, but I'm not 100% satisfied. I was happy with the adapter until I have realized that if I switch apps while the music from iPhone is playing, then the music stops because the BMW Connected app does not support multitasking. So, you have to keep BMW Connected app turned on if you want to be getting data from the iPhone to your iDrive. If you receive an email and you turn the mail app on, the music/video/radio stops. Then you have to turn BMW Connected back on again. I find this annoying but I believe that the BMW Connected app can be updated to a version that supports multitasking, so that this issue would be avoided in the future.

I do not like the fact that my iPhone 4 can hold only 32GB of data which would mean that I personally can only keep music on my phone and no more space for any other apps or videos.

I thought that I should buy an iPod Classic with 160GB and keep all of my music on it in while playing it with an Y cable, which would allow me to spare the storage on my iPhone 4 for everything else. Well, to me its even worst with Y cable then adapter, because not only that you do not get artwork on the screen, but even with a search button is hard to go through the music list. I really do not like this interface while using Y cable. Not to mention that iPod (or flash drive) will not display the photos/videos/internet radio.

Now, I'm returning this iPod Classic to the Apple store. I will need to be selective with the data stored on my iPhone 4 and wait for another iPhone with a bigger storage capacity. The interface with the media adapter is so much better and easier to navigate than with USB port. Somehow, if feels to me that even sound quality is better via adapter.

Not to mention, that with this adapter you can also use "My Remote App" which is the only way to send google address from iPhone to iDrive Navigation system.

This is unbelievably bad. 6NR has just gone way down in my estimation (until they sort this out)

Not sure why you need an adapter to use the My BMW Remote app to send addresses to the car. You just need the app and an active BMW Assist / ConnectedDrive account

I want to get the adapter (car is on order for production 21st week) but I also intend on upgrading to the IPhone 5 this year. I have not idea if this phone is going to be thinner than the IPhone 4 or whether the snap in adapter for the 4 will work for the 5. What to do.......

Latest rumors is the next iphone will be called an iPhone 4S and not out till at least September. Few pictures that have circulated it appears to be same size as an iPhone 4, so it might fit the current BMW adapter.

As with anything Apple, wouldn't count on anything until it actually launches.

Even if the the next iPhone fits in the cradle, that doesn't mean it will work unfortunately. There is a thread where someone modified a cradle to fit a new version but iDrive detected it wasn't compatible and rejected it.

It's taken almost a year for BMW to release the media adapter for the iPhone 4. Expect the same delay for the next iPhone. With this in mind, I recently got a 12 month contract for an iPhone 4 (rather than wait for 5)

Does anyone have a Speck fitted case on their iPhone? If so, will it fit into cradle with the case on? My wife has one of these on her phone and plan to use it on mine as well. It would be a major PITA to have to remove it in order to dock it.

It is tight so anything protruding top or bottom will give you problems. I doubt if any cases can stay on with it in the cradle

OK. Sorry guys, I was wrong a bit, because I did not notice this until today. As we know, under ConnectedDrive menu, there are 2 extra options achieved with media adapter. One is Apps: Facebook, Twitter and Web Radio. Second one is PlugIn where the music with an iTunes interface like resides. When the BMW Connected app (that is installed on your iPhone) is turned off ONLY the Facebook/Twitter/Web Radio gets disconnected. iTunes music stays on no matter what app you are using in that moment. So Apps appear not to have multitasking function, but PlugIn does (I did not check what happens when video clips from iPhone are played).

No, I do not think you need adapter to have "My Remote App" working, but people may need Tech pkg. as a part of the smartphone integration set up.

You've taken this discussion in a whole new direction. Notice the nice (albeit Freudian) progression...

Okay, ordered the snap-in from getBMWparts.com today. Hopefully it's in stock and ships right away. I'm planning to switch from Droid to iPhone next week so I'd like to have it when the new phone arrives.
