Interior lighting brightness

Is it possible to change the brightness of the ambient lighting, without changing the brightness in the instrument cluster?

On my wife's car, these two options work independently of each other. Yet on the X3 they appear permanently linked.

They only control that has any effect, is the rheostat by the light switch. This dims or brightens both simultaneously. In the idrive menu there is an option to change the interior lighting between Classis and modern. Beneath this is a brightness option, but it doesn't change anything???? What is this supposed to do? What am I missing?
