My suggestion on winter wheels is buy wheels that do not have complicated spoke patterns that will trap fresh snow or slush. A simple 5-spoke wheel should work best. Also make sure the spokes are robust enough to support the wheel if you hit a pothole without bending the rim.

I got a set of 18" Rial Como wheels for winter on my 328 coupe and they are, regrettably, no longer round. Couldn't take the harsher conditions, ice, ruts, etc. Next time I'll try to find something a little more durable.

My view on all alloy wheels:
1. Black or dark grey to hide the BMW trademark brake dust 2. Five narrow / symetrical spokes for easy cleaning (see brake dust) 3. Forged alloys - never cast - strength and less weight. Stick with thses golden rules and live a long and happy, stress free life. It they look good - bonus points.

There are at least 3 other 18" wheels suggested by Tirerack for the X3 and they're not forged. Total package for wheels and tires was around $2k. Take another look.

For winter conditions I would never bother with forged. The wheels will get dinged every which way between November and March regardless. If they get so badly out of round you just toss them and replace the wheel at about $300 a pop.
