Sorry for the stupid question, but did you reset your MPG gauge? You really, even with spirited driving (unless you're literally sitting in traffic) shouldn't get less than 17/18mpg with those engines.
My '11 35i has about 17k miles and I get 11-15 mpg depending on traffic. I drive only in Chicago, with the occasional trip to Lakeside, MI in the summer. Over the summer on a hot day with the AC blowing and the window open, I was able to get 9.8 mpg pushing the car hard in Sport+ with the paddles. If I drove a Tahoe, I'd probably get 7 mpg.

2012 x3 14k miles on it. regulalry 22 suburban driving, some country some town, highway about 25, 26. hit 30 once but it was only for a short period and went down after that.

I know this thread is mostly related to the N20 owners but wanted to share what a N55 equipped X3 can do (also, I couldn't find a more generic MPG thread).

Got 29.2 mpg recently on a short (49 mile) country drive. This was over country roads with small towns every 10 miles or so. So there was a decent amount of stop and go along with a couple WOT passes on 2 lane country roads. Just normal driving. Pretty impressive when you consider the performance of the N55. While I've seen a few 30 mpg trips it's only over a short distance. I imagine with some hyper-miling techniques I could get 30+ mpg out of the N55.

Impressive *IF* a manual calulation backs up the compter's claims.

I have a 2012 28i and have had 2 software update to fix the hesitant in acceleration from stop and was averaging 25 mpg on highway and after last update I am getting 21 mpg?!! Anyone had the same issue? Wonder if they can uninstall updates?

The manual calculation works if it is always you filling the vehicle up at same temps, exact same gas station and exact same pump, etc. Some pumps shut off sooner, some later.

Honestly, the only way manual calcs can be very accurate if you only ever put in the exact same volume after each fill up. Say you put in exactly 10 gallons every time then that is a repeatable controlled variable that stays constant. I'm too lazy to do that though. I just top it off every time to maximize the time I spent away from said gas station.

I doubt the variables you cite would "move the needle" much at all.

I have driven mine new x3 about 400 miles split between comfort and eco driving modes on approx. 85% city and 15% freeway and I live in the foothills of northern california and I am averaging about 24 mpg.

I have the same engine in a X1 and I get about 450KM on a tank...which licks. The ONLY time I had had good fuel economy from this thing is when driving on the highway on cruise control at 110km/h or 70mph in regular transmission mode (not DS) which is really not any fun. Not sure why it sucks so much.

Diesel is where it is at, IMHO, for fuel economy and good pick up. BMW needs to get the diesel versions of many of their vehicles to N. America ASAP.

Just purchased a 2012 exec car in January. Took a 1500 mile trip that was mostly Interstate travel at 80 mph. With car fairly well loaded still averaged about 24 mpg for the trip. In town average is between 19 and 20.

11.3L/100km currently as calculated by Fuelly (idrive thinks i'm at 10.8), but that's mixed city / highway and I'm sorta feeling out the engine right now

ECOPRO is a bit pointless for me as most of my trips are on the highway anyway. Around the city ASS kicks in anyway.

I notice the following ECO PRO behaviors: if you're cruising on the highway and you flip to ECO PRO mode without changing your pedal position, you'll instantly see an improvement in your F/E due to throttle remap... but you'll feel the car slow down. However, if you're on cruise control and you flip to ECO PRO, you get *NO GAINS* because the throttle is already being controlled electronically (makes no diff since the car is maintaining speed)

I'm getting 11.0L/100kms at an average speed of around 47km/h. This is pretty bad fuel economy imo. Car has about 2600kms on the odo atm.

Or, for overall numbers, keep track of miles and fuel used overall. I've driven my 28d for over 8600 miles so far, and have an overall average of just over 30 mpg. The computer generally overstates the mileage vs manual check. Sometimes by just a little, sometimes by a couple mpg.

It is probably skewed a little bit by more highway miles vs city than I would normally drive, counting a trip to Nebraska and one to Illinois from Oklahoma.

But one time calculations can be off. How is the wind that day? If you are fighting it, it will hurt. If it is behind you, it helps. How many hills? Speed?

my poor mpg

This is a very old (almost ancient) thread but I am worried about my mpg for the past 500 miles. I have a lead foot but my average is 15 mpg (95% in comfort mode) in city driving; My commute is pretty short (about 10 miles) in heavy traffic both ways. Sometimes I have the feeling that my X3 does a better mpg in sport mode. Could it this be true? Why is my mpg so low?

My lifetime average in 5500 miles (city+hwg) according to the iDrive is 17.9 mpg

Info: 2014 X3 Xdrive28i, 93 octane gas, Pirelli P7 cinturato all season RFT, Miami FL

Well, the default "Comfort" mode in LCI has been remapped to have a sportier response, so it will be more aggressive on the throttle. I noticed this when I had a 2015 rental while my 2013 was being repaired. Supposedly the 8sp has been reprogrammed to have a neutral coast feature on the highway, but I've never seen it kick in.

Additionally, Auto Start/Stop is more aggressive on LCI. Kicks in almost instantly after a stop, and it doesn't seem to be impacted by stop and go traffic as much. Pre LCI, bumper to bumper traffic will cancel out ASS if you're moving only a few feet at a time. Also, switching to Sport mode (not DS) will deactive ASS on the LCI version.

I've only had my 2015 x3 xD28i for a week but I've noticed two things:

- The car uses a LOT more gas when the engine is cold. My fuel use always spikes off the chart for the first few minutes of driving each morning. However, I see you're in Florida so I doubt your engine is as cold as mine (it's been between -10 and 0 celcius this week).

- The car uses a LOT more gas when you drive with a heavy foot. This is kind of obvious. I just miss my old car (a 2008 Civic Si) which had about the same EPA numbers (21/29) and the same 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, but I could drive the crap out of it and still get 23 mpg. I still wouldn't trade back in a million years

Learn to drive with a lighter foot. Save your engine and your fuel... And save heavy throttle for 'sometimes.' Or drive like you stole it and smile at the fact that at least you enjoyed using all that gas

I was a bit gutted to be going back to a diesel, but there is no choice over here on the X3.

However, after living with it for a while and reading these threads it makes me glad I have the diesel now, I am getting nearly 600 miles per tank, so not far off 1000km between fill ups.

Did it got better?

Right now im at 3fuel up with less than 500 miles O.o. i been getting 14-15mpg(us) im thinking about going to the dealer, i have been driving only on ecopro on city, tomorrow im going to the highway just to see if the mpg gets better...

L/100km

I've been driving my 2016 x3 xdrive28 for roughly three months now and am averaging 15L/100km (about 15.5 mpg). I just broke 2000km on the odometer.

Gas consumption is pretty shit. I do a LOT of short city trips, and so far only in cold weather, so that may be the reason. I've only used comfort mode, and auto start/stop is always off. Hopefully the numbers improve when the weather is warmer.

I envy those that get the 24-26mpg with mixed city/highway driving.

Anyone else getting similar numbers as me with mainly short city trips?
