Why does the radio keep playing after I exit the car?

I park my new X3 in the garage, hit the 'stop/start' button, exit the car, shut the garage door and go inside my house ... I can still hear the stereo bumping away in the garage.

I go back to the garage a few minutes later ... still bumping away.

Is there a way to get the car to turn off the stereo when I turn off the car? I didn't see it in the options.

Just press the Start/Stop button twice. The first press turns off the engine and the second turns off the accessories circuits.

If that doesn’t do it, your car is haunted and you need to call an Exorcist.

kmarie, THANKS for that!

I can just imagine someone (with their foot on the brake) endlessly pressing the button and wondering how to get out of the endless loop.
Not a pretty sight.

or else you can just push it once, get out of the car, then push the lock button on the key remote and it will lock the car and turn off the radio - at least on mine it does

Lock the doors. It stops.

I think this is a great feature. Great to hear the last bit of a song, or an NPR story while I'm getting my crap out of the car to head in to work or pumping gas.

Aren't some systems getting overly complicated? I think this might be one of them.

(Having said that, I'll probably order this feature on mine!)

Might be simpler as it does things for you that make it really hard to leave something on that will drain the battery.

-- If you turn the car off and lock the doors, it goes off.
-- If you turn off the car and don't lock the doors, it shuts off for you after 8 minutes.
-- If you don't turn the car off, but lock the doors, then it turns off the car and the electronics for you (that is, if high beams not on; if they are, it shuts off before you run out of gas or the battery dies).

That last one may sound goofy, but the thing's quiet enough at idle that if there's any other noise I have to check the tac to see if it's on; if something interrupts my "routine" it's not too hard to get out w/o turning it off!!

You won't need to order this feature. It's standard. It's not part of Comfort Access.

On my X3 that does not work. You can hold the Start/Stop button for 10 seconds (on the first press) and the accessories still stay on. It takes a second press if you want to leave the doors unlocked, or a press of the remote lock button to kill the accessories circuit immediately.

I guess bmw changed it with the new models. that works in the 2010 335d as well as my 2008 mini s, but both of those cars have comfort access. maybe that has something to do with it? I'm unsure as I don't have my x3 yet

Yep. It seems that all the manufacturers are still trying to "zero-in" on a more universal, standardized user interface. I know that Toyota changed the way their Start/Stop button works after their bout of “unintended acceleration” recalls. Previously, there was a short delay when you pressed the button to stop (you had to press and hold), so repeated, rapid presses would not kill the engine.

BMW is still playing with the iDrive details, although the version in the X3 seems pretty intuitive (finally).

With my M4 you could code using Bimmercode to turn off the radio/IDRIVE as soon as the door is opened with the car shut off to prevent this issue. I agree it's annoying. I was surprised to see with the G01 X3 you can't code the same feature. Maybe there's an advanced way to code it, but there at least isn't a simple toggle coding option with Bimmercode.

So I either press start/stop twice or shut off the car and then hit lock anyway on the remote. I'm one of those that always locks my car even in the garage ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Even though this is a 10 year old thread, I'll jump in since it was resurrected
It's a great feature to have the stereo stay on when you stop the engine.

It allows a passenger to keep listening, say if you're running into the store while they sit in the vehicle.
It allows you to continue to listen or use the nav, phone, text messages, etc.. after parking if you're not immediately getting out.
If you lock the vehicle it will turn off.
If you double press start it will turn it off.

For me, I like the feature and would not disable it via coding.
I believe it turns off on it's own after xx minutes, there's even a timer in the coding to keep it on longer.
