BMW updates via USB

OK, so we have a new-to-us X3... 2016...

I check the bmw website and find there are updates available for the car, and download them onto a USB drive.

Process looks pretty straight forward.
Insert drive in usb socket in center console,
scroll through idrive and click on 'update' the software.

Here's my question:
Anybody ever run into challenges or complications with such a simple update process updating their F25 on their own ?

I assume the updates are worthwhile - otherwise why would they be there.

I honestly didnt even notice what "updated", but I'm guessing it fixes bugs and what not

I didn't see any noticeable changes in the software.

The only challenge I ran into was that you cant use a USM hard drive. It has to be a thumb drive. Other than that, it went smoothly.

I have but could be isolated to my car only. Ever since BMW reflashed my car at the dealership, the car always complains about updates not being compatible with my car. It has not been an issue since I only have an iPod classic and an android phone to worry about and so far all of the phones I have had are compatible.

Also, these updates are only to support newer devices and improve compatibility with existing ones. It does not do anything else.
