Moving on to the second generation X3

Last weekend ordered 2013 X3 28i with the following options;
Trading-in my 7.5 years old 2005 X3 with 100k (Blue Exterior and Oyser nevada a great combination).
Alpine White Exterior, Chestnut Interior with wave wood trim
Convenience, Cold Weather, Premium, Sports activity and Navigation.
The toughest decision was the engine choice. Test drove twice and finally picked up 28i based on the first instinct and personal preference. I always trust my first instinct when it comes to choices. No offense to 35i which is a great engine but I didn't see much difference between both. I have prices both version and the difference was only about $1000. (35i without sports and premium).
Since my wife drives 08' LR3 with 300HP and that would be our long distance driving vehicle, I don't need another 300 HP endgine.
My first color preference was Blue but family said they are sick and tired of seeing blue in my previous 2 BMWs (2001 X5 and 2005 X3). I liked the AW over black for two reasons. Maintenance and the X5 parked next to me at work is black and only looks good few days a month after the car wash.
The only option I skipped was the rear view camera. With 22 year driving experience, I would like to rely on my own senses of sight and hearing when it comes to driving.
BMW site shows that my car has already entered the production process and my dealer says nowadays, they are orders are being delivered within 2 weeks here in Boston. Hopefully I will get mine delivered before X'mas.
Thanks to the forum community for sharing their knowledge which was a big help in my research.

I'm sure you made the best choice - based on your personal needs. Edmunds Inside Line recently conducted a comparison between the X3 2.8 and X3 3.5.

Congratulations on the new X3. It will be interesting to see your comments comparing the new car to the old one. You'll enjoy AW -- it is one of the best colors for this design.

Thanks. The major difference is the size. 2013 X3 is almost identical to 2001 X5 that I had. May be the height is just couple of inches shorter. 2013 X3 is more powerful than both 2005 X3 and 2001 X5. The size of the tires gained about an inch from 17" to 18". The other major change is in the technology. With push button start, engine start/stop, USB connection for iPod/MP3/Flash drive, effortless transmission stick, auto tailgate, improved mpg (x3 does 18.5 mpg average) and heating/AC/radio adjustments without knobs all are the most noticeable improvements. The only downside is the design of the rear windows ave reduced visibility when compared to the previous generation of X3.

Took delivery of my 2013 X3 28i this afternoon. It took just 13 days to deliver from the order date. Kids were sad to see 05 X3 being driven away to used car lot at the dealership. Took some quick pictures of 05 & 2013 side by side. It was a muggy drizzly afternoon here in New England.
Drove the new X3 over 20 miles today. Due to evening traffic I couldn't really test the power beyond 85 mph. But compared to older model, N20 engine feels like a clear choice winner. Interior Chestnut leather looks really gorgeous and it is a shame that none of the cameras cannot capture the real beauty of this color. Kids loved the color. Sports package is a must to improve the appearance. Silver grill looks much more elegant on alpine white. The new X3 is larger and almost equal to my old 2001 X5 but more powerful. Connected the flash memory with my music collection into the usb port inside the storage compartment between the front seats and once selected multi-media instantly start working.
These pictures shows my old & new side by side.

The SAP changes the grill? I thought silver was standard.

There is no published criteria for grill color. I guess the standard grille is black and silver is part of SAP. I also got the upgraded wheels that is standard on 35i.

I think all grills on US spec X3's are silver no matter of what packages they have. I think only the diesel models have black grills...

I'm probably wrong on some level but thats how it works according to my knowledge.

Day one driving to work on ECO mode on got me 24.4 mpg. It is a 20 mile ride mostly through the back roads with total of 17 traffic lights. My old X3 does 18.2 mpg on commute to work. It is already 30% savings on my fuel.
I am already got used to Start/Stop function and it works great. No more guilty feeling at long traffic stops. Once you have accepted the 4 cylinder engine in bmw you will also accept start/stop feature. Changes are hard to accept.

Congrats on the new car and your excellent taste in paint color. You'll love the new X3 -- it just gets better the more you drive it.

Your former X3 looks really old compared to the new one!

Hm, not sure. we have a 2013 x3 28i with the sports activity package, and our grill is black...which I happen to like as it looks bad arse in a white car. previous discussions here indicated that all 4 cyl engines in europe/UK used black grilles, with the 6 cyl models using silver grills.

but for the current production cycle, who knows. folks are reporting that the factory "ran out" of the 307 style wheels that come standard on the 28i, and are thus delivering x28i with the 308 style that otherwise is standard on the 35i. note that the OP's x3 28i has the 308 style wheels.

When I ordered the 28i, I thought I am going to miss the standard wheel on 35i. My lucky 28i which has the production date 12/1 got the 308 style.
