Brake Upgrade
Are there any brake upgrades out there for the '14 X35i?. Seems every place I go.. not much stuff available for it.
Maybe I am just used to driving C-Class and 3-Series sedans and still getting used to the stopping distance of my very first SUV. Thanks |

I looked around as well.. in Japan a firm named ARMA apparently put together a kit for the F25 but there was no information available aside from a couple of Facebook pics.
For the record, the part number for the front brake disc is 34106787490 and seems to be compatible across all variants of F25 according to REALOEM. Part 34106787490 (Brake disc, ventilated) was found on the following vehicles: F25 X3 28iX SUV, N52N (WX53) : Front brake-brake disc F25 X3 28iX SUV, N20 (WX93) : Front brake-brake disc F25 X3 35iX SUV, N55 (WX73) : Front brake-brake disc |

Ceika Performance has a BBK for the front.
I've been corresponding with them and they are working now on a compatible e-brake solution so that one can also upgrade the rear brakes as well and retain the factory parking brake. As far as I can tell they are the only ones working on the e-brake solution. I got templates from them and tested that their large 8 pot front and large 6 pot rear will fit in the 19 inch M sport rims. I can post the template if anyone else is interested. Here is their website: http://ceikaperformance.com/Custom-Built-Brake-Kit-c11/ I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the e-brake compatible rear brake so that I can complete my modifications. |

I have not yet addressed brakes with my X3 and it will be a long time until I need to. When the time comes I am going to look at Akebono ceramic pads and Brembo rotors, if they are available for the X3. I have been using these parts on my Z3 ever since it went out of warranty and have been very pleased. My 2002 3.0i Z3 came with exceptionally good brakes and I see no degradation in performance using the Akebono pads. However, the ceramic pads almost completely eliminated the major dust problem.

Not to indicate I don't follow your point about the heavier vehicle and the great stopping distance compared to the sedans you mentioned, I found there was a learning curve coming from 3 series sedans. For me, the pedal feel was different, and the increase in nose dive (really not bad for an SAV) caused me to feel disappointed with the braking at first. After a bit of driving, I pushed the pedal more aggressively than I had in our 3ers, and filtered out the motion a bit more. With that -- though I'm sure the stats show an X3 stopping longer than a 335i -- I found my ability to stop was far better than I first thought.
Perhaps you've already sorted that bit out, but if not, suggest giving it a try and seeing if you're at least a bit happier with your stopping capability.

I think its more of a different braking and stopping feel than the actual stopping distance itself. Edmunds tested the 2012 X3 28i and 35i as well as the 2012 328i. Braking from 60 mph to 0 mph was tested as follow:
X3 28i: 127 ft X3 35i: 115 ft 328i: 115 ft |

Yeah, kinda what I been thinking... its a learning curve and get my brain coded for the new vehicle thing.. Good Point. Not sure why TopGear UK things is a pointless vehicle that should have never left the factory.. I am happy with it so far. |

My satisfaction with the brakes on my 2002 Z3 was soley because of how satisfying it felt when braking, both with respect to how the car felt deaccelerating and even how the pedal felt. It was not because I had any specific knowledge with respect to performance test data. When I switched to Akebono pads and Brembo rotors that same feel was maintained so I was happy with the new parts. |
