I'm happy with it. Engine is young (200 miles) and I ve still only use half a tank. My old mans range rover would be looking for a petrol station by now. Poor comparison but you can see my point, for a 4wd sav I think it's exceptional and it will only get better. Nb I'm running the 19" alloys, switching off stop/start most of the time and the climate control is working hard as it's so blooming cold when I head to the office hence the official figs will be out of my reach!

Stop / start is reportedly worth 3 to 7% depending on road type. In theory it pays to switch the engine off if the stop is more than 4 seconds. And the longer the stop, the better (unless you are running late!).

... but it automatically restarts after something like a minute. Not sure if this is temp, time or pressure dependent but that was my experience.
I think if you're stuck for a bit you'll need to manually turn the ignition off to continue saving fuel.

I noticed the stop start not always kicking in on my test drive when in traffic and the BMW guy said it was because the engine hadn't been running for long and it needed time to charge the battery so wouldn't always activate when the engine was cold. Would also be affected by cold outside temperature but that's as far as my knowledge goes...

Stop/Start only kicks in when it's over four degrees. In traffic mine will switch off but then keep the engine on during subsequent short stops eg at lights that are causing a queue. I assume the computer senses that your stopping and starting a lot in short bursts therefore disables it in order to maintain battery charge.

There are YouTube videos describing this. The system ensures the battery never goes flat so will not turn the engine off below a certain battery level or if there is a restart risk (eg cold engine). Clever indeed but could later in life mask a faulty battery, tho you would know as the system would never turn the engine off.

I'm enjoying the fact that this thread is currently sitting right next to fedinand's gas mileage thread http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=489243 on the 35 petrol X3. 18 mpg US (21.6 mpg UK) around town. Ouch!

I have 38 MPG (UK) over 8000km - allow approx 10% for the winter tyres.
Good, but no where near the 50MPG claims (downhill, tailwind, small driver....). |

Am I right in thinking that mpg is calculated indoors on a rolling road and therefore not subject to wind resistance? The BMW brochures include a figure for what I think is a drag co-efficient for comparison across vehicles.

They are rolling road and they are done by the car manufacturers themselves to set of rules. You never get an average very close to the official figures but they do provide a pretty good comparison from one car to another. I'd be happy with anything over 40 mpg for mixed driving

I posted some of this on another thread but to keep it all together...
First 765 miles is average of 32 mpg for mixed driving. This is exact based on exact amount of diesel added and miles recorded on car. The figure is skewed by quite a few short urban journeys - I blame the wife for the poor economy . More positively, I managed 41 mpg over 240 mile trip driving more conservatively (including 43 mpg on some A roads) and also 37.5 mpg on a 150 mile trip. All will luggage, 2 adult passengers and a babber on board
