I think it comes through certain radio stations, or perhaps just to the radio on a similar frequency.
My 135i gets it too, and as far as I know has no other comm ability (no bluetooth, no cellular type service, anything). |

To grab Traffic Info from Radio stations, you car has to have the TI_TMC parameter turned on.This parameter is turned off by default on US spec cars. You shouldn't be getting this. Some owners have HU retrofits that are European and the default profiles for those units is for those parameters to be on as fall-backs on RTTI a ARTTI. If you have a US Spec car then perhaps it was coded. I have seen USB thumb drives that are supposed to be doing only certain things turning on all sorts of other things it is not supposed to do which is one of the dangers of using them. |

FYI: The sticker for my 2013 X3, lists Real Time Traffic Information under the Technology Package, along with Nav, BMW Assist, Rear View Cam and Distance control.

My 2011 received traffic data until I traded it in last month - I always thought it came from SiriusXM. I was an active subscriber the entire time I owned the car so I will take your word it that it was a lifetime subscription to traffic feeds.

I have a 2011 X3 with lists "6UH Traffic Information" as an included option when I look up my VIN. My X3 has CIC. Build date July 2011.

I just wish the XM traffic data was faster and better...it both takes too long to load to the point I often look at the traffic on google maps on my phone before driving off as it takes at least 5 minutes to load the traffic data...and when it does load, it is not as accurate as the data on google maps.

Ditto for my 135i, not only no subscription but no hardware for it.
I think the answer about this is it can come from multiple sources, generally speaking, this particular one might be XM but there are other possibilities as well. |

I find it to be the opposite. Here in Florida with the real time traffic and reroute turned on with the latest 2018 map update, the BMW's nav system is better than Google Maps.
