Just picked up car. Paint has bubble/defect

So I finally picked up the X3! Everything's GREAT except the passenger door has a freeaaaakin bubble like blemish in the paint. It looks like it'll peel off soon. We took the car home and the CA assured us BMW will make it 'right'. I don't see any options other than repainting the entire door or replacing the entire door. Sucks...anyone have any advice for me?

Pop it like a pimple?

On a serious note I'm surprised QC didn't catch it. I mean it's not like it's in some random place, it's right above a badge so you'd think they'd notice when the person was gluing it on.

I have something similar which I didn't notice immediately because it's on the bumper and it's much less noticeable and slightly smaller than yours. I decided against asking them to fix but if it was where yours is, I wouldn't hesitate. Good luck

It just sucks to wait so long for something that's supposed to be immaculate, only to now have this on my mind...

Please let us know the outcome. I'm sure it will be as good as new, it's just annoying they don't pick these things up in QC

Not a great beginning. I'm sure they will make it right. I had paint bubble and flake off on the front bumper cover of my 335XI, although not from day 1. They replaced the piece. I was happy.

Get Some Proactive

I'd ask for the whole door to be painted. The car is new enough that color matching shouldn't be a problem. On the flip side, some of these dent repair guys are good enough to make small repairs and match it nearly perfectly.

Congratulations on your new X3, and I'm sorry about the paint bubble.
It seems BMW's QC slipped. or could it be a paint problem that developed after manufacturing (ie. during transport)?
I also have a subtle paint blemish on my rear bumper (it is more like uneven paint surface rather than a bubble like that).

Garage List
Show it to the dealer and ask that it be fixed. Also, tell them that if the repair is visible in any way, it will not be acceptable. This is a very conspicuous area. I agree with others that this never should have passed QA - but they seem to be having some problems in Spartanburg, because my rear bumper had clips that they missed during assembly and was not properly aligned. I also have a coupld of small fisheye spots, but none that I felt I needed repaired.

The problem is, that will eventually get scraped off - and leave a very noticable pockmark in your finish. Once that happens, your dealer will just say it looks like a stone chipped it or something and they won't fix it. Show it to them now!

Oh, I saw it before I left the dealer and they know it was there before I left. They told me to drop the car off in like 2 weeks...they'll need the car for 5 days to try to spot sand/repaint that area .. what evs ..

I now notice that the two panels don't match up very well. See photo below, the front panel is flared out more than the door panel at the arrows. It matches well on the other side.

I also noticed on the steering wheel.. at about 4 o'clock, in back .. you can feel the end of the stitching sticking out. It pokes my finger pretty sharply.

Also, anyone think the motor for the windows is pretty damn loud?

I would not let them repaint the whole door -- long term, that paint will not be as good as the factory paint in terms of robustness. However, they can easily chip off that defect and airbrush the spot so that you don't see it. The airbrush guys are pretty damn talented.

You can't stop with the door. Paint will have to be feathered into the surrounding areas in order for the color difference to be masked.

You should ask for a new car.
