Just saw this on leftlanenews.com

EPA rated the new X3 turbo 4 at 21 city and 28 highway, 24 combined.
so its 2 MPG better than the 35i, less than a 10% gain.

Makes me feel better about my 35i purchase, 0-60 is a second better and at a loss of less than 10% MPG, I would still buy the 35i over the new 28i.

I actually just priced out the new 2013s on bmwusa.com (didn't realize they were available to build already). Now that the 28i M Sport is identical to the 35i (same wheels now) you can build the two identical except for engine obviously, and the price difference between my 2012 35i and the 2013 28i is only $2,650, thats pretty amazing that they are that close in price when built with the same options, now the base prices did go up so the difference of a 2013 35i and a 2013 28i is probably closer to $3,300. I can't see anyone getting a 28i with all those options though, if you are going to pay over $50,000 for an X3, you better get the 35i as in the long run I will probably get most of that $2,650 difference back come trade in time.

And if I'm not mistaken, only the 35i can get paddle shifters & another item or two. So, I too am glad I ordered the 35i. But I suspect you can't go wrong with either...

I am very surprised at those fuel economy numbers especially since the 528 is so much higher (especially on highway) and weighs about the same. I think real world driving may be a little better than those numbers. If true, however, it makes me feel much better about my 35i

Well after 8,500 miles (in just 5 months, yikes!) we are averaging 22.1 MPG with a good mix of city/highway. On a few long road trips we have gotten about 25 mpg, so I think the mileage on the 35i is dead on.

the 528i numbers may be inflated like the 328i were and the EPA hasn't gotten around to correcting BMW on that yet! You would expect the 528i and X3 28i should be pretty close since the weight is only 100 lbs or so different.

That's a lot lower than I expected. Didn't BMW advertise like 37mpg for the N20 engine?

Based on the video above the 528i does get 37 mpg so a similar weight X3 should get about the same. We have about 4 weeks before the N20/X3 hit the street and we'll know then.

Everyone is talking about the similarities to the 528i... Need we forget the less desirable aerodynamics and 4 wheel drive of the SUV? I bet the higher ground clearance and vertical tailgate alone contribute more than 75% of the X3's worse economy.

I agree. The X3 has big sticky SUV tires and a less aerodynamic profile. It just screams "friction" which is counterproductive to fuel efficiency. It shouldn't be compared 100% to the 528i. It's more similar to the X1.

Is BMW NA gun shy after the 328i downgrade?

I was really, really hoping to play the efficiency card for the X3 over the Acura RDX (2013's).

Somebody lie to me and say there's another 5 highway miles per gallon hidden in the ECO-PRO button.

BMW has stated that you may get an additional 20% following using eco pro mode so that means the 28i could get as much as 33.6MPG.

I too believed the earlier hype. Ordered the X3 328i. I do not recall seeing the eco-pro setting anywhere in the specs. I tend to drive light, but still fast, so I am now expecting about 30 MPG highway and 26-28 suburban. Ordered 4/1 but not yet scheduled for production. Be here by end of May if I am lucky. More likely end of June.

Well, not every BMW owner drives at a speed of 60 miles on a 30 mile road.

Even you don't wanna drive like a Camry guy, you have to drive like that otherwise tickets will come. Eco-pro mode will help you to save more while you driving on a limited speed street.

+ I'd hazard to guess the 28i are more likely to be driven by women... That said, I'd drive one too if BMW Canada would sell the 28i equiped like the US versions.
