I love it : Wife hates it

Just replaced my F31 330d xdrive with a F25 3.0d Msport LCI 16 plate 2 days ago.

I love it ... I do 15-20k miles on the motorway a year, and found the F31 just too low down - given that I compete for space with armies of 40 tonne truck divers watching films and facebooking and aggressive Audi drivers plonked 2 foot away from rear end at 80mph... My folks and in-laws also struggled to get in & out of F31 now...

My wife though, hates it . Says she feels more exposed ... (She doesn't drive it, just passenger). She also thought it was an old mans car " like a Ford Focus" .. So I have some work cut out to convince her. Certainly not an old mans car as the look is quite modern ... She's not a car enthusiast
Did anyone have similar reaction from spouse ?

As to the car : build quality much better vs F31 . I got the 20" rims, RFT and no VDC - was a bit worried as F31 had adaptive .. But it's absolutely fine, even on uk roads. Compared to the F31 on adaptive and 19" , it handles the pot holes and road undulations much better .. On same roads, don't get the usual thuds and bumps I had on F31 in usual bad spots... Got a very good deal : was pre- registered with 3 miles on clock, 10 days after new plate , and with haggling and things thrown in, got equivalent of 27% off list and a brilliant trade in value for F31 ...

Welcome from a fellow lci owner. My wife was initially sceptical about the X3. We had just sold an E60 530d M Sport, and she was of the opnion the X5 was the only X worth getting.
We looked at the F15 X5 - we both agreed it was too big for our needs and my having to drive in central london.
We looked at the Evoque (why do girls like that thing so much?), before she rightly said it's not a family car.
She sat in the X3 and immediately fell in love with it's proportions, especially the useable boot space.
She initially felt exposed (everyone can see me in the passenger seat?) , but she loves it now (8 weeks of ownership), as do the teenage kids. It has been a very positive experience for me.
As far as old mans car... Stick it in sports mode and push the horses. She what she thinks then

Hope your good lady starts loving it very soon.

Well it was my wife who suggested it, she had drove the X5 on a long trip and loved it. Was too big for us but the X3 fits the bill and we have enjoyed it a lot. We are not car enthusiast but we do enjoy our 2 bmw's a lot more then ANYTHING else we have owned, yes cost more but certainly more bang per £ and always great to get into and drive.

Regularly drive Plymouth to Bristol or Southampton and makes the journey so much better.
Hope your wife can see the benefits soon..

We have both ..

F31 and F25

Both of us prefer the X3 overall; however the 3 is more chuck able .. But bloody heck is it low !!

Must be an age thing but stepping across into the X3 or falling down into the 3 series .. I know which wins

My parents, particularly my dad who is 88 struggle to get in/out of the 3

Yep.. After its run in ( 1000 miles) , I'll give it some wellie.. Hopefully that'll change her view 😄.. I knowwhat you mean about Evoque. One of my colleagues had one, we all ripped the proverbial and renamed it "The Lady Rover".. He sold it 3 months later.. Confessed later that he hated it from about 30 mins after driving out the showroom ..

Agreed. Both the wife and I love ours.

She was set on an X5 when we started car shopping a few months ago, but after test driving everything up through the X6, the X3 just felt like the perfect size. She fell in love with it. The new X5s almost feel too big for driving around town.
The build quality and ride are great, and I really enjoy the 28i engine.

Actually, the four cylinder N20 is probably my favorite the about it. Feels light, balanced, and plenty powerful. Well made 4-pots have a special place in my heart.

Edit: my wife and I did get a good laugh looking at the X3's brochure; the bearded, flannel shirted husband figure clearly BMW's not-so-subtle way of saying "not for soccer moms."

I found myself in a similar position as the original poster. We area getting on in years, but still very active, my wife and found it difficult to get in and out of our F31.

After going to the nearest garage (Oxford BMW) the wife said to me after sitting in the X3 for a few minutes, why did we not by one of these 2 years ago? I said that I suggested that, but you said it was too big?

Ah well! You cannot win them all.

I had her c class AMG alloys refurbed a year ago and they are all in a shocking state again

Cant wait.

It was either an F31 320d Msport Xdrive or an X3 20d se.

I have suggested i drop them all off and pick up again. That idea has gained some traction, and she has not cottoned onto my alloy saving ways.
The rim tape isn't something i have seen in the uk. Doubt it would work, or last long with the damp weather.

To protect your rims, you should consider:

The product is not generally known about even by BMW dealerships. I had them fitted to my 2012 F31 and they saved rim damage several times.

I have not tried them on my X3.

I've been looking for something to replace my Grand Vitara SUV, didn't really consider the X3 until I took my 135i to the dealers for a service and decided to test drive a X3 3.0d just for kicks.
Well, what a magnificent engine! I was expecting some turbo lag, sport mode hugs corners, needless to say I placed an order, couldn't be bothered waiting for the next gen to arrive.

We have our X3 for just over 3 weeks and bought it to replace my wife's Acura RDX. I drove it for the first 2 to brake it in (my wife could be really heavy on accelerator), and then it was her time. She was intimidated first with all the new technology and had some trouble with forward-reverse-park selector. She likes it more and more every day, I even noticed that her bad driving habits are changing. It's our first BMW and I think of getting one for myself now. Feel like a great birthday gift for myself.
