$1000 discount from BMW driving event

I took part in a BMW driving event and as a result they emailed me a $1000 allowance towards a new car. This money goes from the manufacturer to the dealership, right? In other words, would the dealership make the same amount of money from the sale whether I have the coupon or not? When would you present this allowance to the dealership during the negotiation?

I bought a new X3 by telephone. the price they quoted me was $300 over invoice so I didn't feel that there was any need to negotiate downward from that price. When I picked up the car I presented the CA with the $1000 coupon(I actually forgot that I had it) he checked with his boss and they took another $1000 off of the quoted price getting me into the car at $700 below invoice. The first dealer where I participated in the Driving Event wanted $3000 more for the same MSRP X3.

the $1000 owner loyalty works the same way if your current ride is a late model BMW I don't know the specific requirement but my 2008 328xi got me another $1000 off what I negotiated.

Short answer = yes. The dealer is reimbursed face value from BMW. You should not let this discount coupon affect your negotiation, as it does not impact the dealer's profit.

I see. Thank you.

My coupon expires at the end of October, which is just about at the end of the build time frame if I place the order soon. When a person places a custom order rather than buying off the lot, do you close the deal before the dealership places the order or when the car arrives?

When you sign the papers, usually either shortly before, or shortly after the car arrives. I did sign the papers at the delivery, but it is not that common, I hear...

Okay. So in order to use my coupon by the end of October I'd better place an order ASAP. Actually, have the 2012 builds even gone into production yet? Probably not until October, so I'll likely not be able to use this discount. That would be a bummer.

I got a word from my dealer that it is actually true. They are in production.

Well, I am not sure, depending on the dealer allocation. Shop around.

It's all 2012 from here on out. Production, that is. Dealers still have 2011s and might even have some in transit.
