Brake or transmission problem on X3 -05?

I have a 3.0i -05 X3. It has begun to jerk during acceleration up to about 50 mph. It sounds as the 4wd engages and reminds of an auto trans that is upset and shifts up and down when it wants. Anyone having experienced the same problem and knows the reason? The brake disks looks bad (dark and scratched) and the brakes feels weak. The car has 50 000 miles on the odo.

It took BMW almost a month to correct the problem. A faulty servo motor to the Xdrive clutch packet caused the problem. Time will tell if this was the primary reason.

Update, it was the brakes that caused the problem. BMW didn't bother to check them so the problem came back. I removed the wheels and this is what I found. The inner pads are completely worn and they were totally stuck.

Finally, the car runs as it should.

I am glad that you could find the problem. Its the infamous problem that most X3's have esp automatics. My car has the same problem and I thought it must something to do with a software update for transmission which is causing uneven shifting of gears. I probably should take a look at the brake pads just in case if they are bad. I don't feel any issues while braking though.

Just curious, was disc brake warning light on? as it gives an indication of pads replacement.

No brake warning even though the sensors were severely grinded. The car even passed MOT a few days ago. But the inspector said the pedal pressure was not normal and that the pads were very worn.

I believe the history is that the brakes have never been maintained during the cars life time, and finally the pads were stuck. It required a lot of force to remove the pads, I'm very surprised the brakes worked at all. The appearance of the disks clearly indicated something was wrong though. This was pointed out for the dealer when they got the car for investigation, but they have obviously ignored it totally.

The car has always been serviced at an authorized BMW dealer according to the scedule. I'm not terribly impressed by their work, mildly said...

The difference now i huge. The braking power is quite good and the brakes responds well to light pedal pressure.

So, now it may be a good time to address the next annoying issue, that the car is a PITA on bumpy roads. Everything is in order and work as it should but the ride is by far too harsh. I guess more narrow tyres with a larger profile would help.

This is a pic of the rear brake pads that also were completely stuck, as the front pads. The car is always serviced by BMW according to the schedule.

I'll see how they compensate me for this, hopefully in a reasonable matter or they will be in BIG trouble.

Update, the dealer called and told me I can fetch new parts w/o cost. Case closed and I'm happy with their service since they responded well to my complain and takes the extra costs.
