I'll reach out and see if there are any updates.
It is -35 with windchill today in Edmonton AB today and got that dreaded message again. Tried your little trick and so far so good.

Good to know it worked. I was expecting (maybe somewhat hoping) to see the issue resurface on the weekend so I could give this workaround a try but never had the chance.

Just wondering, is it wrong to wish like your car to be reliable, beside fun to drive?

Interestingly BMW Canada has offered 2 Year Extended Warranty to us. Not sure only to us or Why for us? Anybody else out there been offered this Complimentary Gesture to restore faith in the Brand?
Just got an update from the dealer. No luck, no warranty offer for me. Nothing. Just suck and enjoy the ride while under original warranty.

Sorry to note that. Interestingly, a friend of mine, is planning to purchase the same X3 2015 model from the same dealer. They had not disclosed any issue with PDF till I informed him of the issue. He went back to the dealer and queried about PDM issue. They told him the PDM issue is fixed in 2015 model. We have not recd a recall for fixing PDM. Not sure if anybody else in the group has received a recall for fixing PDM in 2014 X3. Again not sure if the dealer is pulling a fast one here. Sincerely.

4 months with Cadillac SRX - no regrets so far. In some areas it is not a BMW, but mostly I am happy that it is not In these 4 months I did not have a single issue. It just runs and it is quite a fun to drive. Not to mention that for its price I have got more interesting features than I had with X3.

I received an engine malfunction message pop up on my 2011 X3 35i for the first time today. The engine kept cranking but wouldn't start, eventually had to get it towed to the dealer. Will find out whats wrong with it on Monday, but it appears to be in line with what others have been experiencing. I understand most people have experienced issues during winter, but it is pleasant here in Edmonton at the moment (+20 C).

Does anyone have an update on the PDM fix?

Well boys and girls,,, it looks like many of these theories are going to keep getting blown out the window! Just drove my new 2015 228i home from dealer 4 days ago. Two days ago as we are driving in napa ca at 40 miles an hour, car starts to shake, rattle and roll... It's not fun when error comes up: drivetrain malfunction : drive slowly.
I turn off engine... Sit 4 minutes , start to drive and she starts shaking again! Got her going and got home. Got the tow truck over from ASSIsT and drove with wife to concord dealer.
He tells me I was low on gas and can't get to replicate but car checks out well! I am picking it up tommorow but there IS a PROBLEM going on and I told him if it happens again, I'll be the last time as there is an arbitration law in CA.
This can't be a minor fluke , in my opinion. (This thing shook me up so bad I forgot to fill car up and dealer says with a few gallons in tank, this malfunction alert could trigger! (BS) it happened with more than half tank earlier that day....!!

Just an FYI but the new PDMs (and cover) are making it into the dealers. I'm booked in to get mine replaced for the end of the month.

Cold weather the past couple of days and after a short ride and stop, my truck wouldn't start AGAIN. I have a brand new battery installed earlier this year after same thing happened. Just wondering how your new PDM is doing. Any problem with cold weather? I am just sick and tired of freaking out at cold weather.

Went through a couple of extreme cold periods and absolutely no issues. So looks good.

Along with the new PDM I believe they've also got another enclosure they put it in.

If I run into any problems I'll post on here so if you see nothing from me all is good.

Had new pdm installed per recall here in canada 3 weeks ago. Prior to that during cold weather i would occasionally get most of the issues mentioned here.

So far with new pdm and extreme cold conditions... All has been good.

Was there a recall for PDM? I want to get it fixed and I told the dealership last year but they're didn't fix that, instead they put in a new battery.

Thank you. I called the dealership in Ottawa and spoke with a service advisor. Good to hear he knows exactly what I am talking about and said it would only take half an hour to install that and I am going in next week. Now hopefully I can sleep at night knowing this problem will be looked after.

Drivetrain Malfunction 2011 X3 i28

I've experienced this same issue just recently. Happened twice within a weeks time. No issue with starting the car,I was in drive both times when it happened, both times it bogged down and limped for a few miles and then just went away. BMW has had it for the past 2 weeks. So far the diagnosis is ..Ignition Coils,Thermostat, and Drive belt Tensioner.(will need new plugs replaced also) ? Not sure if it is cold weather related or not . I've only had the car a few months.Bought it used with 50k miles.

Just had this pop up today trying to pick up speed to 65+ (was driving for 10 minutes at low speeds before then to get gas). Message popped up along with vibration in the drive train. After driving it a mile the vibration disappeared along with the message.

Car did sit in the snow and ice for about a week without being started. Could it be ice/snow in the wheels and other areas caused the vibration?

Anyone else experience this before?
