Not an inspered feedback - are the Pirelli snow tires that bad? If they are the it's Blizacks W70 s for me...

The Pirelli winter tires have actually lost significant ground vis a vis other prime brands in tests here in Austria (where we have lots of snow and lots of mountains). Continental, Dunlop, Good Year and Michelin have been dominating the charts for the last 3-5 years. I have Dunlop 4D on mine and was really happy last winter. Braking and accelerating on snow was perfect. Cornering can be a little better, but not too bad. Can't wait for the first snow. My skis are ready for the season.

Local ski area opened this last week - may go this next week if there is enough snow to cover the rocks...

Well, you really can't expect the 4500lb SUV to outbrake a 3000lb sedan...
Accelerating and cornering surprises me though.

It's probably mostly due to the change from top rated Nokians to performance oriented Pirellis.

I switched from a 260hp fwd Acura CL-S on Kumho winters and I always had to feather the hell out of the clutch to get started on snow/ice and it'd oversteer if I hit the throttle mid corner.

I can't even trigger DSC on the X3 without being a little irresponsible

Tangsta, I should know better with respect to braking but the X3's cornering (with performance control + stability control) and acceleration (AWD) should have been significantly better IMO.

Oh well, I'll get 'good' winter tires when the Pirellis are used up.

Handles great. Although I do notice some slippage before dsc kicks in and it starts transferring power. I can see why people would say that xDrive feels more "reactive" than Q5 quattro, but I wouldn't give up rwd bias for fwd.

That said, with my Dunlop Wintersports, DSC almost never comes on... unless I mash the pedal on ice just to see it work.
The Q5 also has a RWD bias (40/60) just like the X3. It debuted for 2009 with the same updated version of Quattro that was introduced in the B8 A4.

Bridgestone to Michelin

In Vermont a couple of weeks ago in only a few inches of snow, I thought the dealer-supplied Bridgestone Duelers on my X3 were weak in cornering and stopping. I'm getting them replaced with Michelin Primacy MXM4 this weekend. These are all-season "touring" tires, as opposed to all-season "highway."
I'll see over the coming months whether or not I want to buy an expensive set of designated winter tires -- depends a lot on the winter weather, I guess.

I thought the MXM4 were bad on my 07 TL-S. No traction and noisey on the hiway. Changed to Michlen PS 2 and PA 2 for winter tires.

Hate to shout the wolf all over again, but with NokianTyres I haven't changed my driving style almost at all compared to summer tyres. You can see the video on Video gallery.

Even with over 10 cm of salt mushed snow between the lanes, I can change lane without any hesitation, it is as smooth and rigid as it gets.

From traffic lights I accelerate as fast as in summer.

Together the xdrive and good winter tyres are just unbelievable good. I am so happy with my car at the moment her in snowy and cold Finland

As they say in Nokian slogan: Trust the natives.

Interrested in feedback on the PA4 install and performance.
