i think i read somewhere the x4 would be fitted with the n20. A good bet the x3 will get the new motor when the x4 hit the production line.

Well yesterday I test drove the X1 with the N20/8spd auto.

I was really impressed with the performance and I think that drivetrain would really suit the X3.

From my recollection from recent test drives I would place performance midway between the current 28i and 35i. That said the X3 is a bigger vehicle so the engine swap may loose a bit in the transplant.

There was absoulutely no need for additional power at 100+kph but in the city I found the n20 was happiest with the transmission in DS mode.

I did not find any trottle tip-in annoyance in the X1 but I was in DS mode.

I likely won't wait for the N20 in the X3 so for me the 35i will be what I order.

(I'll be doing one final test drive in the XC60 T6 later this week. The Polestar factor tune to 325/349 hp/tq is very appealing)

over at bimmerfest.com, they just posted the production schedules for the current models. the '12 x3 will only be produced through 3/12, at which point they will switch to the '13 model year. maybe then.

I recently drove the X3 20i and found it to be underpowered. You really had to work the engine hard to get the car moving, as it not light.

The 20d was better and the 30d was effortless.

My 2c rounded up to 5c.

So you are telling me that my 2011 X3 that was built in August will be two model years old less than 7 months after it was built? BOO!

I find this hard to believe. It's normal with a new model year in delivery Q4 each year. Around SEP/OCT.

Sure they can add new options and a new engine, but a whole new model year? Nah...

I think you can just take it easy...

I had an X1 28i loaner for a couple days and have to say that, while the engine is excellent and delivers great performance, the sound when driving normally reminds me way to much of my wife's CRV. The best way I can describe the feeling of driving normally in the X1 is to call it "uninspired."

My experience in the X1 also showed that, if you leave the transmission in D and apply light throtte leaving a stop light, it does have the sort of lag that I have heard discussed about with the X3's and F10 5-series cars.

I got an email from the dealer today stating that the N20 will be offered in the 2013 model in Canada.

So if you want the normally aspirated six 2012 is your car and if you want the turbo four you'll have to hold off till 2013 (or late 2012)

Does anyone know when BMW starts 2013 production?

I heard early in 2012, like April or so. The 2012 MY for the X3 will be short.
