Belt replacement
Hi
I mentioned to my to my brother (mech savvy, owns a semi) the engine whining noise that I can hear in cold weather (below 62) He asked me to pop the hood to check even though the weather was rather warmer than past days; so we could not really replicate the noise Any way, he mentioned that the serpentine belt is a bit worn and needs to be replaced. He used some WD40 to lubriacate it because he said that it was dry My question: I will be ordering a new belt from here https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...ItMGwtbDQtZ2Fz Should I also order the belt tensioner? https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...ItMGwtbDQtZ2Fz Are they supposed to be replaced together or not? thanks PS: my vehicle is a 5yo 2014 X3 Xdrive28i with exactly 30k miles |

At 30K miles you don't need to replace the tensioner/pulley assembly - they are typically good to 100K miles (it's the pulley bearings that eventually wear out).
WD40 on the belt; well Ok, I presume your mechanic brother knows better than I...but I've never heard of 'belt dressing' being used on modern cars serpentine belts, particularly WD40. Good luck/Bill |

Serpentine belts these days are designed to last in the 100k range. Not saying you should necessarily wait that long, but 30k is pretty low. Curious why he thought it was worn at 30k. Anyway, it's one of those "it can't hurt" type of things. Same for the tensioner. They should last past 30k, but if you hear a noise it's more likely the tensioner than the belt. If the $100+ is no big deal to you, go for it.
