Trade in question
So we are looking to trade in our 2008 LR2 with 45,000 miles for a 2012 X3 35i.
The LR2 got damaged in a hit and run in my wife\'s work parking lot. A body shop told us $1300 to repair mostly paint work with one dent that would have to be popped out. Should we repair it then trade it in or just trade it in as is? Nada guides and blue book say it\'s worth $22,000 average trade. All these dealers can fix it for $400 cost but they probably will take $2000 off the trade (that is my fear at least). I guess there is no real way of knowing how much they will take off for the damage as they probably won\'t tell you the truth. |

dealer will use the damage as a negotiation tactic to low ball you. Have it repaired without using insurance (avoid the car fax) and then trade.

Yep - if it comes up on carfax as in an accident - no matter how small...they will try to use that against you.

well I finally took my old SUV in for appraisal, Carmax and BMW both offered me the same amount. I didn't get it fixed or even cleaned/detailed. They offered me $1750 under KBB and NADA average trade in, but I was okay with that since it has 45,000 miles on it and I never replaced brake pads or had a wheel alignment yet, there were probably $1,000 of maint. issues that I would need to do if I kept it and the body damage was only a minor deduction and no where near the $1300 it would have cost me to fix it.
I guess I am glad I didn't put any money into the car before trading it in as I wouldn't have gotten it back in value... |
