2016 X3 35i Racechip Ultimate install

Hi Everyone,

Newbie here. I wanted to share my install (actually r33_RGSport's install) of the Racechip Ultimate in my 2016 X3 35i. It's a lease, so I wanted to give it a little boost that wouldn't be hard to remove when I need to take the X3 in for service. Searched the forums and it seemed like the Racechip was the best choice. Much thanks to r33_RGSport for the module and install. Seemed pretty straight forward. Used Torx #25 bit and flat head to remove air filter cover. Two plugs in the same locations as the other N55 engines. Module tucked away in an area at the back of the engine on the driver's side.

I also put in an AFE Magnum Flow Pro Dry S filter. Currently on "B" setting. Comfort mode feels more spirited and smoother. A lot less acceleration lag when stepping on the pedal. Couldn't really test out Sport+ since I was stuck in traffic going home, but definitely felt peppier for the short bursts I could use it. I'll update once I get more miles in.

Mingstar88 how is it going for you?

I ordered BMC Air-Filter, noticed EAS and M's folks use it and prefer it over K&N.
I ordered mine from bimmerzone.com cheaper than other places i found.

I have my unit on the driver side (behind headlights) there's a nice big space there for me.

First two pics are when we picked up the car from the dealer. I also put in an AFE Magnum Flow Pro Dry S filter. Currently on "B" setting. Comfort mode feels more spirited and smoother. Thank you so much for doing this. I had the JB3 stage one, see video below of the 0-60 in 5 Seconds flat. and it gave me problems at least once a week with "drive train malfunction" and I always had to shut the car off, let it rest for 2 min, then start it again, only for it to go off again at a random time the following week(or a few days even). It was cumbersome and I removed it within 3 months. I was getting 360hp at the crank and 355 trq. It was impressive to say the least but now the RaceChip brand has shown to be superior, not just in performance but in reliability. I would at least adjust your settings until you can hit 60 within 4.9-5 sec. These engines are strong, you wont break it easily, trust me. Please give us an up date...

OP, please disclose in a private message or here what was your MSRP, money factor, residual, miles, the amount out of pocket and how much per month...

I forgot my money factor and residual but here are my numbers for my: 2013 X3 35i M w/DHP

60k MSRP (Every option), $3400 out of pocket, 10k per year for 3 years, $558 a month.

Yes it's an insane deal but I just like to see what others are paying because I'll be ready for a new lease in about 4 months. Please let us know, i'm sure others are interested. The X3 is only going to get more popular...

Thanks everyone! I will keep you updated. Just bumped it up to "C" last night after about 50 miles on "B".

That IS an insane deal. I'm guessing they gave you a high residual. Couldn't get close to that. I posted in another thread, so I don't mind posting here. My MSRP was $59,100, agreed price was $52,995, residual is $32,505 (55% of MSRP), $6K drive off, $650/mo (includes tax), money factor was .00129, 10k mi/year for 3 years. They said I could have gotten a more expensive 3 series for less b/c the residual is higher on those cars. My out of pocket and monthly essentially match their national deal (2015 35i w/metallic paint and M Sport only, $4394 + taxes and fees due at signing, $599/mo + taxes), which I've read can't be negotiated.

Damn that is expensive. Doing the math that is $29,400 all in for you minus insurance/gas/etc. Compared to me at $23,488, which is a diff of $5912....damn I feel lucky, but I know I wont be getting a deal like that my next go around. Good luck with your brand new X3

The module was hidden in the compartment towards the back of the engine on the driver's side. If you look at the engine pic, there's a cover at the right top that can be removed. r33_RGSport just routed the wires there and placed it in. Sits pretty snug, but is still pretty easy to remove. Didn't need to use any zip ties.

Since you're in LA, 91 octane right?
Even though I found plenty of 93 Gas stations when I visited LA, found them in Marina Del Rey.
C should be driven for a whole tank better off, as well as D and every other setting since you're in hot weather also.

Thanks ROBNYC. I will do my best to go a whole tank before bumping up to D I haven't logged many miles since bumping it up to C, but seems pretty good. Do you know how high others have bumped the RC to on their N55s?

Do you remember which station you found 93 at? I'm checking with my buddy who lives in the Marina and drives a 2013 M3 to see if there are any gas stations that still have 93 octane. As far as I know, it's all 91, although there is a station not too far from me with 101 octane, but it's $10/gallon.

Forum member F15 35i has raised it as high as 4 (progressing thru each setting after at least 100 miles)
There were plenty 76 Gas & ARCO were on the same street.

Howie, thanks for tr prop and support. Glad to meet you yesterday.

As far as settings, don't use others high setting as a benchmark, because even though it is the same type of engine, every individual car has different outcome. You have to find it what is best for your car.

Also, you can always use octane booster to match to 93 octane power output.

Wow, that's 8 settings over what I'm on right now. I can't imagine. Looking forward to the next 8 tanks Thanks for the info.

I'm guessing that it's Lincoln Blvd. That's the only street that has a ton of gas stations in the Marina Del Rey area.

You're very welcome and it was great meeting you as well.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely make sure I don't overdo it. It's just like overclocking your phone, except it's on a $50k+ machine

I was looking into octane booster. Royal Purple Max Boost seems to have good reviews. Do you have any recommendations?

I don't unfortunately. I personally do a 20% mix of E85, but I am running BMS JB4 where it have control on the fuel flow.
You can try it also if you want, 1 gallon at a time.
I have read it somewhere that 25% mix is the max you can do without other modification.

Yes i think thats exactly, make your way there
And when you can't get 93 octane, buy Torco Race Fuel Accelerator (its what I use to get 98-104 octane combined with my 93)

What is his process for making sure his engine can handle it? Is he logging? With what? And if he is, what is he looking for exactly?

Hey everyone. Just wanted to give a Racechip update. I've been on "C" setting (one up from the default "B") for about 150 miles now. Comfort mode is much more responsive than stock and "B" setting. Sport+ w/shifter in D/S has been very peppy, but a bit jerky up until recently. I'm guessing the engine is finally starting to adapt to the setting. Sport+ wasn't as noticeable in "B".

EDIT: Sorry everyone, but the 0-60 numbers below are wrong, so please disregard them. My heads up display shows a 2mph faster speed difference compared with the readings in both the Torque Pro and DashCommand apps, so I was compensating to have the apps match my heads up display. However, according to Torque Pro, manufacturers do that on purpose for liability issues and the OBD reading is the actual speed. Based on that, my fastest 0-60 was 5.5 sec with 3/4 tank of gas, which seems slow considering stock should be doing 5.3 sec. Maybe the 91 octane fuel has something to do with it. Also figured out that the HP displayed was at the wheel with Torque Pro, in which case, the 360hp initial reading is wrong and the subsequent readings are probably closer to what I should be seeing.

Also did a little 0-60 and HP testing with Torque Pro. HP was inconsistent. Not sure if I have my settings correct since the app relies on what weight you input for HP calculations.

First round of testing I did with 1/4 tank of gas (91 octane). Best 0-60 time read 4.9 sec and power was 360hp. Thought that was pretty good. After I filled up the X3, I realized that I put the total weight incorrectly; I had inputted total gross weight with a full load (4230lbs + 910lb load) instead of the weight of just me, gas, and whatever else was in the car. Estimated a load of 270lbs. Tested again. This time, 0-60 was 5.1-5.2 sec, which I would think is reasonable with a full tank. HP varied greatly and was significantly lower than my first run with the incorrect weight. Highest HP I got was 312 (with the 5.1 sec 0-60). On my 5.2 sec times, my HP was 292 and 260. Doesn't make sense. Loved the fact that the reading said 360hp, but I don't think that's accurate. If anyone can help me figure that out, it would be much appreciated.
