Winter RunFlat Tires - Canada
Im getting ready to buy a set of winter RFTs for my i35 18" wheels.
- Did anyone of you from Canada consider buying tires from www.tirerack.com or would you only be interested in getting them directly from your Canadian BMW dealer? - If I buy them from www.tirerack.com would BMW dealer accept to install them on my car even though I did not buy tires from them? - Currently, tirerack is offering 3 RFT models in this size. Which one of these 3 would be your choice?: Pirelli Winter 210 Sottozero Serie II RFT Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 ZP Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D RunOnFlat Thanks for sharing your impressions. |

I am not in Canada but just bought my snow tires from Tire Rack. Dunlop would be my choice if forced. The others are not well rated or have very little real world info. I purchased a not RTF that I know works. Blizzak also has the LM60 which I bought in a RTF jsut not in the OEM 19 size. It is a proven performer...

I have had both the Dunlops and the Michelins. Not the Pirellis.
Of the two I had, I think the Dunlops are the better tire for snow. I am looking at getting either the Dunlops or the Blizzaks, but not sure I can get the Blizzaks RFT in proper size. I am dropping to 18" wheels for winter.

Great responses guys!
As you have suggested, Dunlop seams a preferred choice. The price for 4 of them at the tire rack is $1,188.00. With all of the taxes, duties, fees, shipping… total comes to $1,652.38. By any chance, does anyone know the total price for these Dunlop tires at a Canadian BMW deals for the comparison reason? Well, not that many recommended installer choices near me, so maybe I would need to install them at the BMW if you think that they allow. |

I have a set of BMW 308 wheels, 18", that were taken off another buyer's new X3. I got a good deal on them, as I doubt the dealer allowed much to the other buyer on trade.

I have ordered a set of Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II (Non-RFT) with a set of Elbrus I05 rims...... My wife's friend's husband was working with a Hyundai dealership and he charged me less than tirerack.com, even they are buying from tirerack.....
I'm planning to apply for CAA membership again this winter because of the Non-RFT..... |

reseller :4X dunlop p225 60R17 + rims 3440$ (installed) BMW dealer :4X pirelli p245 50R18 + rims 4100$ (including installation + storage for summer tires) The reseller is "pneu touchette" in the montreal region. The quote from BMW is lower than "pneu touchette" for the 18" Last edited by jlr_1304; 09-02-2011 at 10:48 AM.. |

I've been wondering what to do for winters as well recently:
- OEM rims & 19" winter RFTs - OEM rims & 19" winter non-RFTs - OEM 18" + equivalent options as the 19s - aftermarket rims + again the same options of RFT or non-RFT I've been a huge fan of Nokian for many many years; my last 4 cars/SUVs were Nokian only for winters and they always lasted until I sold the car (4+ years) and had insane grip. Haven't seen a review of their RFT offerings though... I'm just wondering though, would using non-RFT tires and calling BMW roadside assistance if a flat occurs be a problem? I've got a feeling they would charge me for the whole thing once arrived at a garage as soon as they found out I didn't have RFTs... Been playing a lot of Milles-Bornes lately with my kid... I could only dream: http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=milles...w=1680&bih=972 |

I just ordered the Dunlop SP Winter Sports 3D ROF tires for my 308 BMW wheels. Apparently the Blizzaks are not available in the size I need (245/50R18) in ROF. I want to stay with the ROFs for simplicity. Looked at the Pirelli 210 Sottozero also, but picked the Dunlops over them.
I have had the Dunlops before (2008 535xi) but never the Pirellis. The Dunlops are a known tire to me, and the Pirellis don't score any higher than the Dunlops in the reviews that I read.

They look great sitting in a stack, but sure are heavy tires at 35 lbs each. I guess it's the thick, reinforced sidewalls since they weigh about 9 lbs more (each) than non-run flats. Here's a pic mounted on my "Winter-only, salt covered road use wheels" Think I'll remove the torque wrench before driving. |

A little silly with the money we spend on the vehicle that BMW assistance wouldn't cover non rfts. The pricing is way too high to justify buying run flats. Considering CAA you can get for 100 per year.
Does BMW assistance not cover ANY road side assistance if you don't have run flats? Like if my car doesn't start or has other issues aside from a flat? |

Can anybody confirm if Canadian spec X3's have TPM sensors in each wheel or do they use the ABS system based monitoring system?

I purchased the Dunlop tires last year for my X3 (245/50R18) in March 2011 from a local tire shop along with alloy wheels (Euro Klasse EK2). I paid more than the Tire Rack price mentioned earlier as my pkg including taxes was $2,500.
At the time, the only winters available were the Dunlops. |
