I checked the wear of my tires (2014 X3 xdrive28i with 20k miles) and bad news

The rear tires are still looking new/even and show 5/32 wear, the front driver is at 4/32 and the front passenger is at 3/32-2/32 (need replacing)

Is there anything I can do that don't involve replacing the 4 tires?

Would it be safe for the xdrive system to replace only the 2 front tires?

Note: if 2 tires were posible, in principle, the rear tires would be moved to the front and the new tires would go to the rear.

Absolutely nothing wrong with replacing just two tyres - the XDrive system on the F25 is much more tolerant of variations in rolling diameters then say with the 1st generation E83. You could also rotate the tyres rear to front if you want.

I however would be asking the question why the fronts are wearing so quickly relative to the rears? And why is one front tyre so bad? With had our F25 X3 for nearly 6 years and 120,000 km (~72,000 miles) and I've probably replaced tyres - due to wear - 3 times I recall. In all cases the wear was fairly even all round and I've replaced all 4 tyres at the same time. I'd be getting things such as front alignment, toe-in etc check to see if you can identify the cause.

I decided to order 4 brand new Michelin PRIMACY MXM4 ZP RFT from tirerack (includes 2y road hazard and 30k miles wear warranty)

After all, I was not happy with the road noise and wear of the pirelli cinturato p7, so I better start new, including an alignment in the process

PS: On the weekend I discovered a screw in the best tire of the set, the rear driver, the one at 5/32 (I was able to fix it on the spot but had to use 2 plugs). The rear passenger tire shows 5/32-4/32 (on the fence), so I decided that it was a better idea to order the whole set and be done with it

Good choice with the Michelin tires. If you do replace two, remember that the new tires always go on the back of the vehicle.

for your next set of tires, look at the Pirelli PZero All Season Plus (new tread compound). A great tire and a set up from the Michelins.

I am considering keeping the 2 rear tires as spares [or maybe just one] (they are at 5/32 - 4/32), although I am not so sure about the different brands

I have road hazard for 2y with the new tires; so, does it really make sense keeping the spares? ... I guess not

You can keep one of your tires for a full size spare when you take a long road trip

once tire tread reachs 5/32 its time to replace it.
replace all 4 at the same time.

If you got down to that low 5/32s or worse, I'd just change them all. A bit too much compromise in the rain IMHO.

Perhaps also look into alignment and tire pressures. Not sure why the wear is all over the place.

The P7s are pretty noisy and "loose" when worn, you'll experience an improvement just by swapping to newer version.

Good choice on replacing the P7's. I find them to be terrible.
