Passenger side mirror

I know this post is about an x4 but bmw has applied similar cost cutting shenanigans to the x3 so perhaps for those interested we can figure out what works together.

Hey guys my dad just picked up a 2017 X4 28i With every option. We just noticed that only one of the outside mirrors dim? Cost cutting at its finest

So my question is, would it be possible to for a 2016 X4 passenger mirror in its place and still have the auto dim ability?

Would I need to replace the entire mirror housing or just the glass?

Coming from other bmws with both sides dimming this was pretty disappointing on a 70k suv.

Thanks for your help

I have a 2017 X3 and mine does the same. Only the driver's side is dimmed but I think this is by design.

On my '16 both mirrors dim but I have noticed it is harder to see the cars and how close they are. For me, I would rather the passenger mirror not dim or maybe not be so dark. Maybe they took another look at it and decided it was too dark or not necessary.

+1 to that. At first I too was disappointed that the pax side mirror didn't dim, but I now realize that it works better at night without the dimming. Quite hard to judge distance at night with a dimming pax mirror, specially a concave (or is it convex?) pax mirror.

To the OP: Reading the promotional material for a vehicle description is important. But more important, is reading what is NOT there if you go from one model to another. Case in (my) point is my old E60 had aluminum suspension/sub-frame parts and I was disappointed when I realized the X4 is all steel down there.

Only one of the mirrors dim, and the operation is controlled by the position of the mirror adjustment switch (left/right).

Pull out that user manual and get familiar with the options on your vehicle. If this is your first "recent" BMW - you will definitely learn a few things.

Yeah, it just feels like cost cutting. All x3/x4 cars have both sides dimming right up till 2016. Wish I bought the car a year earlier hah.

Just a feature I've grown to love. With all the people on the road with aftermarket hids and other blinding lights it was a nice feature to have.

With all of these different features it would be awesome if they were all configurable through idrive...

Some people like them some don't. Personally I love the dimming on the rear view mirror but hate it on both side view mirrors. It's just really hard for me to see when it's dimmed. If a car happens to not have it's headlights on it's practically invisible in the dimmed side mirrors

Yeah. It would be nice if it was configurable. On a lot of cars they have the ability to enable and disable the dimming by the press of a button. Sadly not on bmw.

I wonder if I put the passenger mirror from a 2016 on my 2017 if the dimming would work?

Wonder if its prewired? For the last year of this style of the X3/4 would they really change the harnesses?
