locks don't work

hi folks, thank you for letting me into your forum. Last bmw I had was 318 and 325 about 30 years ago. Now I just bought a used 2004 X3. Locks don't work. I tried reprogramming the key fob. does not work.
checked the fuses related to central locking system, they all seem to be ok.
pushing the central locking button in the car doesn't work either.
tailgate will not open, I imagine since the locks don't work
searched other forums, facebook, youtube, striking out so far.
where do you look from here?
thanks for your help

If the key twisted in the drivers door lock doesn't activate the central locking system, I would go ahead and replace the fuses 49,52,60 even though they look good.

Btw the central locking button doesn't work if a door is open.

DarkwingDuck thanks for your reply

key turn in the door will only unlock the driver's door.
I went to the wreckers, tried to locate the tailgate switch, no luck, searched around, ended up buying a new one from the dealer. That fixed the hatch back not opening problem but the central locks don't seem to want to open unless you press the button inside the car on the dash.

the lights work on the square key but they will not talk to the car, nor will the diamond shaped one.

"replace the fuses even if they look like they are ok" I'll give that a go thanks.

At least you know the lock actuators work. Try going through the key programming procedure.

"Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 and back rapidly 5 times. Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button. If you have additional keys you'd like to program at this time, repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming."
