Hi
My 2014 X3 has less than 20k miles and the armrest (beige leather) got damaged.
I started noticing it kind of discolored and dirty, so I tried cleaning it with a cloth. As it did not work, I tried alcohol and same result; I decided to press harder and then noticed that at a specific spot (3" diameter) the surface of the leather was really gone (from my sweat, aka battery acid) and a dark spot formed on the leather. After that, I tried a degreaser and I was able to remove most of the black tone but the damaged leather looks really ugly

Really sad, I did not know that my sweat was this powerful

I called the dealership and they advised me that the warranty would not cover this type of situation

I then decided to order this OEM replacement
https://www.bestbmwparts.com/oem-par...ItMGwtbDQtZ2Fz

I also ordered this armrest cover, to be used with the new armrest
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Auto-Center-...3D152277144756
,but had to return it because, despite what the compatibility chart says, this is way too big for the X3

Any DIY guide on how to replace this?

I bought a small terry cloth towel, close to the interior color, Light tan leather.
made a pattern from an old pillow case cover, used a small run of elastic
around the bottom to gather it.....................gave it to the wife, who can sew ! !
.
Dirty ( or once a month) ........ throw it in the washing machine with the towels.

yes, I will start using a cover (?) with the new armrest (have not received it yet and from my exploration on the weekend, the installation does not look very simple; my brother says it is easy but I am not so sure )

you can stop by any BMW shop and have the parts room print out the exploded view of the console, that should be a big help.
