660 is incredible! We only managed 480 from the first tank and 150 of those miles was a motorway journey back from London at 70mph. Are you using Eco pro?

Driving in socks and as though he has a glass of champagne on the dashboard.

Yes pretty much all Eco pro really. Used a quarter of a tank so far and done about 185 miles, and Eco pro saved me 27 miles. I shall keep this updated and show the end result with a photo too

Hey every one loves champagne, but you should never drink and drive in case you spill it I have to be conservative with my fuel with the amount of driving I do unfortunately, my boy's nursery is a 30 mile round trip! So twice a day adds up very quickly if I'm on both runs!

Funnily enough 480 was what I got from mine on its first tank

I think driving out of London in the rush hour, down park lane and round Marble Arch, then the suicidal A40 petrified the fuel out of it !

It has slowly improved and I'm now on 7k and in mixed driving get about 540-550 out of a tank

Thanks Andy! Being southern based, my journey was much more simple getting straight on A4 and then M4 but I can imagine your journey out caused a bit of sweating and holding the wheel quite tightly! I was anticipating MPG would improve once it has some more miles and engine has worn in a bit more so thanks for confirming that. I'll admit I turn the start/stop off straight away now as I hate it.

Flipflop - You know you do have some minor control over start stop, it just depends on how hard you press the brake pedal (assuming you have an auto).
If you come up to some lights / stationary traffic, then brake as normal and then ease your foot off the brake once at a stand still, just enough to keep the car still, but not enough to kick in start stop. If you are stationary for a lengthy time, then you may find it will still kick in eventually. I tend to do this whenever I can, especially when I stop at a roundabout as I don't want start stop to occur!
Apologies if you knew this already, but I thought it was worth pointing out so you dont wear your start stop button out! :P

Agreed, I used to use the above cheat to keep the engine running, however, for the past 12 months I have found another good way. As I come to rest, I move the steering wheel from side to side to load the system and the Stop Start gets cancelled (shows on the display). It works every time.

Also if I am lazy and have not bothered to cancel it and it have stopped (foot still on brake pedal) in traffic or at the traffic lights , I anticipate the lights change and just move the steering wheel a little and the engine fires up ready for moving off. Naturally this is all with the autobox.

Thank you both. We have the auto. Petex3, I use your option but even that gets tiresome in heavy traffic. Peter_R, thanks for the info as I didn't know that. I'd just rather start stop didn't exist. I can't imagine it saves any fuel?

I found it saves around 15% on mine.
I am at around 38mpg without it on and 44mpg with it on.
Obviously depends on how much town work you do of course.

The other thing you can do is to flip the lever to sport mode when you stop and the 'start-stop' function will not kick in. Before pulling away, just flip it back into drive. Or just get into the habit of switching it off when you press the start button.

Thank you all for the advice and tips. I shall continue to turn it off for short journeys around town and leave it alone for longer journeys and try jiggling the wheel and slamming it into manual mode in between!

Hi Dan, I hope the new car is still all good!

If the repair on mine doesn't work out, I am thinking of ordering one very similar to yours. I think white is a safe clean colour and looks great on the X3!

If I have to get a new car, I am hoping for a good discount and a delivery as quick as yours, but I won't hold my breath!

Very late reply sorry guys. I ended up with about 65 saved miles, and the tank did 624 miles. Was pretty happy with that!

I'm down to about 530 a tank now however.

Lovely looking car Dan congrats

I'm a fellow South Walian living in England (unfortunately) and waiting patiently for my X4 to be delivered. It's in the UK and at the dealers but for various reasons I can't collect until next Friday.?

Just moving from the F30 328i, so first time for SAV/SUV hope it's going to be worth the wait.

It's going to be a very, very long week!
