Searching for my next Car..... X4 M40i
Hello!
Wife just took delivery of a new X3 28i Xdrive msport. I really liked the car. So much, in fact, I decided to find one for myself--or maybe an X4 3.5i Until I saw the X4 M40, So, now I want one. Can't afford/don't want a new one, but want to make sure I get the right one--cause I tend to keep cars a long time. With my scouring of the reviews, boards and news etc... I'm trying to figure out what the specific differences are between the X4 3.5i, early X4 M40i and current production X4 M40i. What the build dates are to desire/avoid. Also, can any of the improvements be retro-fitted? (read idrive 5) I'm pretty familiar with the mechanical M40i updates vs the 3.5i: Of course I want the latest greatest M40i, but..... $$$$ So, my questions: (Thanks for your help in advance)
Thanks in advance....I'm a noob, so take it easy. Just want some help deciding which star to chase. The newer the car, the longer the wait (for my price/choice to match my budget!) Cheers. |

* You get a really tuned chassis by M-Performance, better pistons and crankshaft shared with the M2/M3/M4, high performance spark plugs, its like a combo of a M2/M235xi * I have 3/7/16 build which means I have 4yr/50k warranty and thus I believe all Pre-April are part of that too. * Post-April gets the new 3yr maintenance and new iDrive * I think its a personal choice whether the 35i options vs M40i are worth it to you In my opinion, I couldn't get a 340 (small/ too low for being practical) or a Benz GLA 45 AMG (little cargo), Macan (cramped and more $$$) so X4 M40i was perfect coming from an X3 28i M-Sport (2yrs ownership). My friend Crashnbrn5 can give you some insight as he leased a X3 35i MSport fully loaded and now has 335GT, but he had a very short but good test-drive of my X4 M40i this summer and tested its limit. Good Luck

I'm neither a M40i or 35i owner, but a 28i owner!
Coming from the "opposite" end of the spectrum I would highly recommend the M40i. Sure, you might have to spend a couple thousand more, but I assure you it will be a much more financially responsible decision than getting a 35i and selling it in a few months to get the M40i. Not saying that you would, but it IS something I am agonizing over right now.... |

There is one "in between way" - to get some fun and be proud of your vehicle.
Question is: do you need the extra 50bhp? I do not. I have a 2015 X4 35i M, with two improvements: lowered and M Performance Exhaust. Note: lowered means better looks (even re. M40i ), but slightly less chassis comfort. M Performance exhaust has two settings, Sport and Track - Track being illegal. I am, still, very happy with my car, but strongly recommend Electronic Damper Control. I forgot:with lowering I got the steering precision and handling, I missed originally with my vehicle. Tjalle, with all due respect to you and your vehicle, please stop attaching the same photos of your car to every X4 thread. It kills the continuity of the thread resulting in less growth of the X4 forums. Why not just list your car in the garage instead so anyone that wants to see can check it out there? OR make a build thread so show your progress with the car?
OP, sorry for going off topic! |

I would just get the X4 m40i. When I bought my X4 35i It was top of the line, 2 months later X4 m40i came out . I say dont make same mistake and get the X4 M40i of course if you can pay the extra.

I have made 937 posts - of which about 5 have had pictures of my car.
Reason for the "extra" pictures are answers to new OP, who - obviously- had not seen pictures of my, slightly, modified vehicle. Since mods are successful, I wanted to share with OP, that there is a cost effective way to enhance 35i. |

From a performance standpoint, the M40i has definite and clear advantages, but these may not be important enough to or better enough for you for the extra $. In my case, I keep my cars for a long time so because this car is my DD, I was attracted by the hardened chassis and upgraded brakes, engine and drivetrain mechanics -- I'm expecting this will mean many years of enjoyable and carefree driving.
As an aside, the car is great in the winter snow. My ski area has gotten more than 300" (I've also had to plow my driveway 18 times this winter) and the X4 gets me up the mountain reliably, regardless of the conditions -- the Hakkas help out too!

Ps, Tjalle, I enjoy seeing pics of your car every time and like the obvious pride you have for it. Post your pics freely, I don't see what the big deal is.
IMHO, repeated pics postings are not a distraction to the forum as much as a lack of timely responses to requests for help and input -- I think this is improving. In Tjalle's case, he was most helpful to me as I was considering my purchase last June/July and with subsequent questions. An active and helpful member like that deserves some slack, again IMHO.

OP, have you made a decision yet?
Since you mention you like keeping cars for awhile, I'll add that I think you'll get better resale % with the M40i than the 35i in about 5 years time. But more importantly, once you start doing some modifications on the car, suspension, exhaust, etc. you are already in the M40i price range. Not to mention these parts are not easily accessible. |

The X4 M40i could be a very rare car someday, why? You cannot order the M235i anymore, its been changed to an M2. The X4 M40i is a true M series as the X5 and X6 have an M series. Eventually the X4 will have an M series version. Making the X4 M40i a rare car indeed.
- A light color interior over a darker color interior. - Cold weather package. If you live in a cold climate I would recommend that. ( heated rear seats and steering wheel ) very nice option to have. -Lighting package is also very nice. Auto high beam control and cuts the dark night like a knife. -The technology package, Is very nice, you would love the heads up display I'm sure. -Driver assistance package, not so important unless you need a white cane while you're driving. I've thoroughly enjoy both of the X40's I've had. |
