X3 Purchase Decision - Two Options
I leased a 2016 28i about 4 years ago and am thinking about getting another X3.
I'm looking at two 2014 X3 35i and don't know which one is the better option. Both are fully loaded M Sport xdrive 35i with the only difference being that one has the automatic high beams and the other doesn't. The main differentiator is mileage and price. Option 1: 57k miles for $24k Option 2: 97k miles for $17k Whichever one I choose I'm going to keep for around 3 years and 40-50k miles. Which one would you choose? |

If it was me I wouldn't even consider option 2 unless it was incredibly clean with very good maintenance records.
If you can stretch your budget the LCI (to me) is a significant upgrade over the pre-lci. I have a '16 Melbourne red 35i M sport, glad I found it. |

You don't say why these 2 are the only options. Because they are local and you don't feel like driving elsewhere in Colorado or Salt Lake? Because they are both colors you love? Because they are cheap? X3s are pretty common so I would guess you have a pretty big pool to start from. I personally would opt for lower miles if I planned to keep it for 50k more, but if the higher mileage one seemed super-clean and was a color combo I preferred I could be persuaded, but I DIY everything, so that makes a difference.

What is the significant changes with the LCI? The pinned post got me under the impression the only changes were some minor cosmetics and the touchpad on the idrive controller.

The interior is slightly different depending on your packages, if you get a 2017 you get a different steering wheel (assuming M sport) To me the exterior of the LCI is worth at least $5k over the pre-lci. If the LCI M sport is a 10/10, the pre-LCI is like a 6/10, in my opinion. See below side by side, admittedly I'm bias towards my own car of course... excuse the horrendous compression... |

That’s right…cosmetics…what gets me is the records on the vehicles. I would inspect both especially valve gasket sea and make sure there are no leaks. I like the idea of option # 2 having the plugs changed just 15K or so miles ago. Option #1 will need plugs coming up. If it were me, I would go with the cheaper more mileage car if it all checks out. Knowing you’re only going to have it a few years , you’ll have more money to save for wear items….just my .02

I did plugs and coils for a couple hundred bucks in parts and it took only a few hours to do, it's not bad if you've got a little experience working on cars. Gives you an idea of about what a dealer or shop might charge. Trying to say that of course maintenance is a factor, if a lot is due, but this particular thing isn't too bad if there is otherwise a big price difference. |
