Engine Oil Experience
Anyone have facts on what oils people actually use in their X3s? So far we have used BMW oil, but really have a tough time believing that Mobil 1 is not as good. Are they any long term reports on successes?

Here in Australia BMW dearlerships used Mobil 1 up until the time BMW negotiated a global supply deal with Castrol. Now all BMW's oil is supplied by Castrol. While Castrol makes good oils I personally would be using Mobil 1. It didn't hurt a five series I had for the 12 years that I had it . Owning a diesel I am feeding it a diet of a local company's oil (Penrite) which I am very happy with. However, I never ever let the oil be changed only at service intervals. The default setting is 15,000 kms between services and I think that's far too much, so mine gets changed every 7,500 kms. Any quality full synthetic oil that meets BMW spec will be fine.

I hate to break the news to you but changing your oil at 7500km (4660mi) is bad for your car. You are actually doing more damage (wear) by not giving the oil a chance to fully break down.

We use AMSOIL 5W-30 European Oil and MANN filters
Greetings, we use AMSOIL 5W-30 European Oil and MANN filters. AMSOIL also makes a 5W-40 European oil.
We have had great success with all AMSOIL products in our customers BMW, VW and Audi. We have an automotive shop that we sell AMSOIL to that uses a lot of the 5W-30 European oil for BMW, VW, Audi and Mercedes. We are near Waterloo, IA. if you would like more information. |

I always use Mobile 1 synthetic in my Mercedes vehicles. I like it the best. I have been able to get a lot of miles out cars with Mobile 1. I didn't use Castrol synthetic until I got my X3. The dealership services it and they use BMW oil/ Castrol synthetic. I am sticking with it. Why change at this point?

I currently use bmw oil because my dealership sells it to me cheaper than any other out there that is bmw long life rated. But I have used the castrol 0W30 european formula that is bmwLL-01 rated. Also mobil 1 has a LL-01 rated oil as well as a few other brands.

i dont really want to add to the notorious oil debates but I will be trying Rotella Fully Synthetic on my next change (next week). I have done this on my e46 and nothing but positive things to say about it. There are a couple great reviews on Rotella motor oil on bimmerforums.com

New BMW Synthetic Oil Starting in 2015
I just ordered a case of the OEM BMW Synthetic Oil for my 2007 X3. However, my local BMW dealership informed me that BMW has changed supplier of the Original BMW Synthetic Oil from Castrol to Shell.
This is the new PN 83212365946 for the new oil. The new oil is also now marked and in black 1-Liter container: 'Original BMW Engine Oil Twin Power Turbo SAE 5W-30, BMW Longlife-01 / Gasoline/Diesel without DPF / Sans DPF.' I have a picture of the new oil but this Forum will not let me post it. |

I found this one here - https://carnesmechanical.com/engine-oil-for-bmw/ |
