Wheel bearing repair

Just wanted to put this out there to folks. I have a 2013 X3 35i with 155,000 km on it (about 100,000 miles).

I've had what I thought was tire noise - humming starting at around 60 km/h and picking up with speed. The noise started in earnest at the same time as I put new winter tires on so I thought it was the tires initially... thought I made a wrong choice or got a shitty set. Fast forward to spring, I swapped to summer tires and the sound was still there - so not tires. It progressed over the summer. I just now got it figured out while I had the car at the dealership for winter tire swap - I had a warn rear wheel bearing on the passenger side. There was humming gear noise by that point starting at 45 km/h and up - easier to hear when slowing off throttle - and it would get louder steering to the right and quieter steering to the left (steering at speed). I also found the car was grabbing and pulling on road grooves and imperfections.

Now that its fixed, the car drives like brand new and is quite quiet again. It rolls over road imperfections like nothing. Big difference.

Just and FYI to folks experiencing anything like this.

Just the diagnosis. I got it repaired at the dealer... told them what was wrong along with detailed symptoms and asked them to verify and repair.

I don't know about everyone else, but the car's alignment in my M-sport model does this with perfectly fine bearings. Maybe it was doing it more than normal, but this thing is darty and literally steers itself through corners at times (like in canyons).

I replaced my right front hub earlier this year. It was very easy to do and relatively inexpensive.

I also just did my front right wheel bearing. The process was pretty easy, despite some confusion caused by the new wheel bearing using different bolts than the original.

The right rear wheel bearing started giving out on my 2013 at only 20k miles. I've seen others talking about their cars doing the same on this board and another board, seems like a somewhat common issue.

Mine was still under the factory warranty or I would have just replaced it myself. It's a pretty straight forward repair.

Would you mind to describe the symptoms?

When I think in retrospect, if you're car's alignment is spot on and it's steering itself over grooves and imperfections, I'm almost sure you have a wheel bearing failing or some other issue.

My car was like that for a while before the bearing became noisy. With the repair completed, my car is back to being like a tank going through road imperfections super solid and without feedback.
