Hi folks, hope to soon be a member of this forum along with the F15 forum as I have that in the stable too.
I've searched for this topic and haven't found a clear answer. I was wondering what the roof rails options are for the X4 M40? I've just realized that most if not all the ones I've looked at don't appear to have the rails to accept a rack. Is this the case or are there connection points in the gutters that a cover plate pops off and you attach there? If I shouldn't expect it to have rails - what are my roof mounted ski/bike transporting options? Thanks in advance

It's doubtful if you can get rails from production, but there is a BMW original aftermarket kit which I recommend you to have dealer installed, since it requires inner roof to be dismantled and holes drilled in the roof.
Bars from BMW or Thule. |

When you order your X4 M40i there are several selections to choose from, 2 styles of BMW boxes, 1 is BMW luggage, and 1 is for ski's. These are factory orders.
I hope this info helps? |

Question was not about boxes or luggage - but rails.
There has been factory installation of both black and silver coloured rails, but I seem to remember they have been phased out. If so, there should still be aftermarket kits. Dealer will know. I have Carbon Black with silver rails, but previous discussions prevents me from enclosing picture . H&R. Last edited by Tjalle; 04-22-2017 at 03:48 AM.. |

Thanks folks for trying to help - I'm wary of asking dealer anything as they either full of crap or so misinformed and don't know heir product at all. It appears either it's ordered as such from factory or you need a dealer install as someone has mentioned. Failing that it appears there are several after market rack options that are for "bare roofs" i.e. Nonrails or connection points. There is one rack that alludes to the X4 having connection points.. https://www.etrailer.com/roof-2017_B...e=&furl=-c1-NR I like the fixed connection point option, but dislike the ones that use the door frame area and affix by compression/friction- just need solid evidence the fixed connection points are there, hiding under a tr cap or something. I'm going to see a car today so will try to get the parts guys to help me figure it out.

In the US, factory installation is not an option. I ordered my X4 and had the dealer install the rails for me before taking delivery, for a cost. I was sort of disappointed when I found this out as I would expect that an SAV would have rails as standard (at least as factory option). I was told that silver is the only option I had as I would have preferred black.
I went with the OEM rails installed by the dealer as it won't for sure breach the warranty and I like the low profile look of the BMW rails, which also allow me to use my existing Thule cross bars. BTW, the rails are listed as parts for the X3, but it can be retrofitted on the X4. X4 Roof Rails
In my case, I found OEM roof rails spec'd for x4 from BMW Atlanta and had them installed by local BMW approved body shop. All-in at about 60% of the local dealer quote.
I do not think rail installation would affect warranty -- but best to use dealer or approved body shop. D
