My wife has a 2014 X3 that we just bought a few months ago. She likes to play music through the YouTube app on her iPhone 6 Plus. When she plugs it in via USB and tries playing from the app, it plays for 2 seconds then keeps pausing and defaulting to her iPod music instead. She hits play again, and it plays for another 2 seconds, then pauses. After hitting the play button on her phone about 5 or 6 times the music starts to play uninterrupted. On some occasions it never does and she just gives up.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? Do we need to update the vehicle software or something?

I tried with my iPhone too and it does the same thing. So the issue is not her phone.

Ive found the music thru usb to be nothing but a pain. I just use the bluetooth and have no problems whatsoever.
