Jumpy throttle in Sport Mode

I am finding that the throttle is really immediate from a stop when I am in Sport mode; not in a good way. For the record, this is a 2014 X3 2.8i.

I find I don't use Sport as often as this is quite irritating.

Anyone else finding this to be true? I have to take it into the dealer for service and will mention, but didn't know if it is common.

It's a "feature". You probably just need to recalibrate your right foot. The throttle mapping is amended in part to show a difference between Comfort and Sport modes.

Just the same, whenever I get into a 4 cyl Toyota or Honda there's a fair bit of head jerking when I tip into the throttle.

Hope that is not the case; I think that is as unnecessary as piping the sound of the engine into the cabin in some cars.

Maybe it's the traction control kicking in and taking the torque off the wheels repeatedly, which makes the car jerk?

I used to experience jerking on my previous car (Audi) and sometimes on my x3 when accelerating to harshly in junctions (I.e. full lock steering accelerating from standstill into 90 degree turn). Never happened when I turned off the traction control.

Try turning off your traction control and see if it still jerks. But watch out if you are not an experienced driver though;-) stay easy on the throttle...

Never disable the DSC unless you're on the track. Maybe not even then. Not worth wrapping your car around a tree.

Yes, mine does this as well. It's not like sport mode on other BMW's. Annoying.

Try starting the car without depressing the brake. The ignition is on, but motor OFF!
Now press the accelerator all the way down and hold for 30 seconds. This will reset your pedal and response.
Your car will relearn your driving

Why wouldn't you want immediate thrust in sport mode? If you are barely tapping the pedal I can understand that.

What Pinewood said. It took my car about 2 months of careful takeoffs not to fly like a bat out of hell in regular drive mode.

After an afternoon of eco and comfort modes in London, there is nothing like opening the taps in sports mode and that trigger acceleration imo

Appreciate the replies. But maybe I am not being clear. It's not that it's more sporty acceleration; who doesn't like that??

My issue is that the tip-in is hair-trigger-like. NO chance of any kind of a smooth takeoff, regardless how I feather the throttle. I can liken it to actually having a sticking throttle, where it "breaks loose" all of a sudden.

Very annoying. As mentioned, if it is truly a mechanical issue and not a "feature", I am taking it for service very soon, and will mention then.

I believe I understand your point, as mine used to do that in Drive mode! (painful!). I've brought it up to my dealer and they said it is normal op. Speak to just about anyone here and they will probably also tell you the same.

I know what you mean about jerky. If you aren't on the ball with controlling your foot in sport mode, you are going to get a "jerk" feeling to it. Once I got use to it I was able to get rid of the jerkiness on takeoff, but I have never been able to get it to go away in sport mode.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! I appreciate the reply, but if that is true it is a pretty uninsightful idea of driver expectations.

If I had my choice, I would have ONE setting: the Sport suspension with the Comfort throttle. I am experienced enough that I can manage the throttle inputs.

The Eco is a joke. Given the hills of eastern Pittsburgh, I might get a couple miles on a tankful of gas. Really not worth the reduced performance. My Saab is far more enjoyable to drive daily.

Yeah I wasn't ever impressed with the eco mode.... Every time I get a loaner (I drive 90 miles a day, 85 highway) I only save MAYBE a gallon over a week. It adds up but it feels like a turd on the flat Ohio roads; I can't imagine even considering using that in the hills!

I was never able to tell a difference in the DHP sport/comfort as far as suspension handling... Maybe on a track it would be more noticeable... Do you notice anything?

Eco does feel like a turd, but fine for Central London, where it's quicker to use a push bike ;-)
Comfort is the defacto standard
Sport appears to hunker down, suspension, steering, drop a gear and increase throttle response - love it!

That would be great - how do we accomplish this?

Within your settings there is "Sport configuration" It lets you choose between chassis, drivetrain or both.

Evidently not on all models; I don't have that option
