The hill start assist device
Hi:
Exactly does this hill holder work? Was it installed stock on all the 2.5i X3s with manual transmissions? I've been studiously avoiding hills for a few days now but I've been caught a few times and stalled causing an orchestra of car horns. (Hey, it's been a while.) Please and thanks! Andy |

I'm not aware of a Hill Assist feature on my 2006 X3 2.5 manual, other than Hill Descent, which allows you to safely roll down a hill without loosing traction.

The hill assist is only for going down hills and is a feature on all xdrive bmw's. Going up hill on a manual tranny is just something you are going to have to practice.

He may be talking about the 3 seccond delay that keeps the vheicle from rolling back when letting off the brake and releasing the clutch.

I know I'm talking about the hill decent button, but I'm wondering what this 3 second delay thing is?

From page 53 of the 2008 manual:
(This is for Manual trany not Autos) "Acceleration assistant The acceleration assistant allows you to conveniently start off on inclines. You do not have to use the handbrake. 1. Hold the vehicle with the brake pedal. 2. Step off the brake and immediately start off with no trouble. The acceleration assistant holds the vehicle for approx. 2 seconds after the brake is released. Depending on the load or when towing a trailer, it is also possible for the vehicle to roll backward slightly during this interval. Technology for comfort, convenience and safety After releasing the brake, start driving immediately; otherwise, the acceleration assistant will no longer hold the vehicle after approx. 2 seconds and the vehicle will start to roll backward."
